Introducing bottles???
« on: April 05, 2008, 11:42:57 am »
Hi, I'm BFing my 10 week old baby and we're trying to get him to feed from a bottle and it's just a nightmare. I'm not getting much sleep at night at all (feeding every two hours) and want to try to introduce a formula feed in the evening to try to get him to stretch a little. We're just expressing a small amount of milk to give him at the moment. He bawls when we try to get him to take it and when he does suck he chokes on it. I know it's been asked a million times, but has anyone got any solutions? We're tried different teats, flows, warm teat, etc.

Oh and I should have said. We gave him EBM before and he took it fine. There was a lag then for a couple of weeks when I didn't get a any time to express. He seems to have totally forgotten.

Hello!
Have you tried the Habermann feeder? From what I hear its the most similar to the flow of milk in breast. OR the closer to nature (tommee tippee) bottles.
There is a post with some 'tips for getting a BF LO to take a bottle' will try to find the link for you.

Best bottles that are not as dear as the harberman are the 'Breastflow' by first steps. I go on about these bottles so much on this site i should work for them lol.

But they really are good, and lo will feed close to how he feeds off you.

Here is the link on introducing bottles:

If he is still feeding 2 hourly at 10 weeks, I might wonder if you should take steps to boost your supply.   Here is some more info.

I had to use formula for a while because of low supply, but do be cautious - using it regularly will keep your supply from adjusting naturally to your lo's needs.  If you do supplement, it is a good idea to pump afterward to ask your body to make more milk at that time.

Thanks girls. I feel confident that my supply is really good. I express and usually get a really good yield and I can hear him guzzling the milk down when I feed him. The odd time he gets sick and when a lot comes up he soaks everything around him!! Some days I wonder if he has his nights and days mixed up, i.e. doing all his eating at night, as sometimes there are days when he takes a smaller feed in the morning. But then other days he feeds well at all times. It's hard to know. I'm reading the links and will try all the tips mentioned. Thanks a million for that. You know when we try the bottle he freaks as soon as it starts dripping into his mouth and he coughs and splutters. I wonder if I can find a teat that doesn't drip, that he can control the flow himself, would this help? Anyone recommend a bottle like this? He takes a pacifier fine and will suck on your finger or even DH's nose when he's hungry  :D!! So it doesn't make sense that he won't suck on the bottle AT ALL. We'll keep trying. I have weddings and hen parties looming and won't be going to any at this rate!!

the haberman feeder is supposed to be most like bf'ing - they really have to work to get the milk out. it's the one Tracey recommended and you can get it thru the site store, if you can't find it locally.
