Help with baby led weaning
« on: April 07, 2008, 10:41:43 am »
HI there.  My DS is 1 week shy of 6 mths and is showing signs of wanting real food. I'm really keen to go down the blw route rather than the puree route. I'm just not sure what to do!!

Should he just start with one meal a day, say breakfast and then progress or would I let him sit with us at mealtime and let him dictate. Should I cook fruits? Should I introduce veg first so he doesn't develop a sweet tooth?

I did buy the Annabel Karmel book a while back. Is there an equivalent for blw? I like the idea of having a meal planner set out for me.  I'm scared in case I give him something I shouldn't or not nutritious enough.

Help!!

Hi SMCK,

If you pop onto the BLW board people will answer your questions there.  You can also look at this link from a while back when someone else asked how you get started.

We started with breakfast and lunch and then when she was sitting with us at dinner, instead of napping (around 7 months) we thought we might as well give her a meal too.  Don't worry about giving the wrong foods, the list will show you how to start.  There is no BLW book, we did think about doing one ourselves, so we contacted Gill Rapley (who started it off) and she is writing one to be published in Oct/Nov this year.

Hope this gets you started.

As well as the Support Thread, there is a sticky in the FAQ section about BLW, and a thread in Recipes called Finger Foods for Young Babies which should get you started :),
