Cooking with toddlers??
« on: April 09, 2008, 18:12:40 pm »
I am looking for a few recipes/ideas that I could have my 3.5 year old help with.  Examples:  Ants on a log, baggy ice cream.  Anyone have any other good ones?

Today we are baking a cake from a mix.  I get to measure and she gets to pour and stir.  I get to put in the pan and put in the oven.   Pancakes: I measured and poured, she mixed.  (then would not eat)
Kneading the bread dough after it comes out of the machine.
Ready to bake cookie dough.
I made scones one day and she helped shape them.  Keep in mind that mine is not quite 3, so yours may be great at doing more.

No recipe ideas, but my ds helps me with cooking all the time, he loves helping.  I use him as a gopher.  I put all the things I will need in a low cabinet and ask him to get oil, breadcrumbs, flour, eggs, whatever.  He gets what we need from fridge also.  He makes the salad,  I cut he puts it together.  I let him help with what ever doesnt require cutting, although he wants to.  Unless he can use a plastic knife to cut, which isnt to often. Happy cooking.

muffin and cake mixes are great - i keep a couple in the pantry for moments when they request baking imprmptu like today - we are making a date loaf that is healthy and yummy and only needs 1 egg, some water and a loaf pan! they love that.  muffins are good as there is lots of activity with the loading each muffin paper case etc.

a good one we did when alex was only 2 1/2-3 was making pizzas - i bought the ready made mini pizza dough bases and laid out all the bits - sauce, shredded cheese, toppings and we made them up together including making faces on them using peas, corn and other small topping bits - she refused to eat them for dinner but LOVED the cooking part.

you can bake cookies and decorate them together or make something like a cereal bar / rice krispie treat which is mostly pouring in ingredients and lots of stirring (my girls favourite part is stirring)
