Soybean Oil Really OK?
« on: April 15, 2008, 18:13:44 pm »
Those of you with lo's who are soy intolerant, do you find that they are able to tolerate soybean oil and soy lecithen okay?  I saw that most do, but I was just wondering what experiences people have had.  I've cut out all dairy and soy besides those two, and yet my lo still has green poop.  The fore/hind milk balance seems okay, so I think it's food intolerance.  He seems happy and sleeps okay, though, and spit up is much less, so I'm not sure I should really worry at all.

This is a good question. I avoided anything soy. I did ask our pediatrician about some other soy derivative (not lecithen) and she advised against it. But since my elimination diet was not enough for DS, I have since forgotten the derivative

I am curious to read what others say.

Kcamelia, some children can tolerate soy oil and soy lecithen others react to these it really depends how severe your lo's allergy/intollerance is.

Mukta, green poop does not neccesarily mean food intollerance. It can just be that certain foods cause poop to vary in colour especially when the body is getting used to solid foods. Howevere it can be a symptom. Does your lo experience any other issues when eating bluberries? Does he get stomach pain, mucous in poo or any rashes etc.

Hi kelly,

Have not noticed anything other than the color of poo when he eats blueberries, and he totally loves them! Have a noticed a few pimple like spots on his butt now and again, but can't say they are related to the berries. Will keep a look out next time. But certainly no tummy ache etc.

Thanks,
Mukta

Mukta - my LO gets dark green poop with no other symptoms after he's had a load of blueberries and peas. I'm pretty sure that's what causes his! Who knew poop came in so many colours :o ::)

Well I called the ped about the green poop, and she said that green can be normal, it just depends on how much bile or other digestive enzymes are in the poop.  For lo's eating solids, I know the food affects the color of the poop--just feed your lo beets and watch what happens!

I am thinking it could be a food intolerance because he doesn't eat anything but breastmilk right now.

Wendy, what do you mean, your elimination diet was not enough?

Here is the longer version... (sorry if this is more than you were asking for)

DS started showing some digestive difficulties around 6 weeks. Over the next 3 weeks, I strictly eliminated milk, soy, peanuts, and wheat from my breastmilk. I would not even consume anything manufactored in facilities where things were made with these items. Despite my best efforts, DS remained allergic to something. After giving him the chance to get used to the "free" milk and heal, his little system was still reacting to something. He continued to show symptoms of moderate colitis. Essentially, his little colon was raw and bleeding. We regularly tested his stools for blood. By the end, we could actually see the blood.

At 8 weeks, we tried to suppliment with Nutramagen and the problem continued. At 9 weeks, we switched him to Neocate (amino acid formula) and held off on the BM to see what happened. Quickly his mood improved. A short time thereafter, his stools tested negative for blood.

I gave up the restrictive diet as the holidays approached. I had plenty of "free" milk in the freezer and kept my milk active in hopes of his system maturing and being able to tolerate my milk. I reintroduced the "free" milk around 4mo. I gave him 2oz a day for 6 days and was able to notice a change in his behavior.

At that point, I resigned that my LO has a super sensitive system and stopped pumping.

My God!  How can formula actually be better for a baby than breastmilk?  It does sound like you made the right choice, though.  I sort of feel like I'm trapped into bfing (although I want to), because he is so sensitive.

If I eliminated nuts and wheat, I'm not sure what I could eat.  However, his poop has turned green since I started eating more of those, so I'm wondering if one of those is the problem.  So confused!

my lo was MSPI. I had to eliminate everything soy including lecithen.  I also eliminated nuts.  Peanuts are closely related to soy (both grown on a bush).  Almonds and other tree nuts were also eliminated.  I didn't have to go so far as cutting out wheat.  I did check for soy or milk on the bread package.  I substituted with yummy sunflower butter.  Trader Joe's is a good brand.  The health food stores also carry it.

Note: look to see if there is abnormal amount of mucous in the green diaper.  That is a clear sign of intolerance.

Try eliminating nuts only.

Just wanted to give an update: I was going to cut out soybean oil, but I decided to go for gluten instead, and his poops have turned brown after only two days!  I guess I haven't eaten any soybean oil, either.  I'll go this way for a week or so and then add on some soy, then dairy, and then non-wheat gluten to see if I can have any of them back.  We'll see . . . .
