Reading Books ... so frustrating
« on: April 29, 2008, 04:30:00 am »
Does anyone elses lo's talk constantly while reading a story?  She does not care about what the story is about nor does she know what the story is about.  She talks and points to the pictures all the time or begins to stare off not paying attention to what I'm reading yet asks me to read to her.

I love it usually becuase its a great snuggle/learning time but I get so frustrated when I try to read and she interupts ALL THE TIME!

I know I should sit back and enjoy her explorations but it still makes me grrrrrr!

Simple answer, have her tell you the story.  Or her version thereof.  ;)
When you're soaring through the air, I'll be your solid ground.  Take every chance you dare.  I'll still be there when you come back down.

I agree, it sounds like she loves the time and now wants to be taking the lead.  we have story time where I read and we have story time where she reads to me and other times when she reads on her own (occassionally) and then we have time when we pick up books and just chat about what we see and whatever it makes us think about. I guess it comes to the value of books - together time, learning to read, learning about story telling and imagination and the basis for thinking.

Brilliant.  I honestly could not see past my own frustration.  Was very careful not to let my frustration outward.  It really would be great bonding time to have her read (illistrate) the story to me.  Total mindflip.

We never "read" anymore either, Leorah always points to objects she wants labeled and turns the pages to find her favourite pics but I guess as long as they love their books it's a great thing  :)

we are right there with you!! Sam loves to say the names of the objects he knows and I use it as a time to teach new words. It can be frustrating at night, when I want it as more of a wind down, but he is still falling alseep just fine.

So funny that I saw this posting. My 3.5 yr dd is same way, while I read she keeps asking "what's happening" it's comical but frustrating I tell her " listen I am telling you what is happening". I forget because she has always been so well spoken that she is so " her age" so I was either going to have her start telling a story or just pretty much find her most favorite and read the same one over and over because I find she actually pays attention more when she knows what is going to happen.
