What do you swaddle with?
« on: May 10, 2008, 16:12:16 pm »
The blankets I was swaddling my 4 wo with are too small! :) I can barely get them to wrap around her. What do you use? Also, the weather is getting warmer...can I still swaddle her and not have her be overheated?

Kiddopotamus brand makes swaddles in size large and makes cotton ones, not just fleece. We use them with my 6 MO. I worry about overheating too - but we put her in short sleeved onesies, and we are getting an AC for her room. I hope this helps!

Hi. Not sure where you live but I live in Ireland and we have cellular blankets. These are blankets that are made with lots of tiny holes in them so that if your LO gets the blanket up to their face they can still breathe through it. Also the holes allow for ventilation so baby doesnt got too warm. I have found them great as my DS is a wriggly little fella and gets free easily. I got the size for a cot as opposed to a pram. Cot size are bigger. Mothercare online would have them and they are 100% cotton.

I used something like this from aden and anais - their muslin swaddling blankets. They were quite big and I used them with my girls until they were about 10 months old. They weren't in a tight swaddle at that point, just the "idea" of a swaddle!

I never had luck swaddling with a blanket because I could never find one big enough.  I had a swaddler from Target that worked fine when she was little but by 3 months she was breaking out of it all the time, so I know where you're coming from.

The miracle blanket is what worked best for us too.  We live in a hot climate and just swaddled her over a diaper, no other clothes and she was fine.  We do have AC, but it still gets pretty hot even at night.  The miracle blanket has a pouch for baby's feet and a long strip of cloth that wraps around baby's body a couple times to hold it in place, there is no velcro.  The material is cotton t-shirt-like material so it breathes and is cool.

I have started to use the Aussie style swaddle with my ds.  You can buy a blanket made for it or I just went to a fabric store and bought some discount cotton fabric, 1.5 to 2 metres and hemmed the edges.  I then looked up on the internet on how to aussie swaddle.  My ds used to break out of his swaddle all the time, and now with this swaddle he has his hands by his face and has yet to be able to break out of this swaddle.

I use two really light cotton "blankets" I made myself from fabric I bought. I use the one swaddle, then wrap the baby again, only reversing the swaddle order, thus locking the baby in a really secure wrap....and since she's huge I've made the blankets big!

I use the miracle blanket and love it at 2 months old.  He gets his feet out all the time as he is still small in it and kicks constantly!!, but his arms never get out.  It works like a charm.....He sleeps 9 hours at a stretch at night in his crib now!   ;D

Definately the Miracle Blanket!  We used it until DS was 5 months old!  Made a difference the first time we tried it!
