Why are my photos sideways?

When posting pics in the photo gallery, anything that is portrait orientation is sideways... how do I fix that?

Is it just on this site Nicole?  Can you change the orientation before you post?

I've tried cropping them, but then it says that the pics are not of the right dimensions for an avatar.  I'm using iPhoto, and I haven't posted the pics on any other site besides facebook and you can rotate the pics there on the FB uploader.
