tummy time, EASY and spitting up
« on: May 12, 2008, 04:35:13 am »
DS is 13weeks and we are hardly getting any tummy time.  Using EASY, activity time comes after eating and every time I put him on his tummy after eating he spits up then starts crying and spits up more.  I tried moving tummy time right to the end of A time, but he still spits up often and even if he doesn't he is usually starting to get tired and is not interested in tummy time by then (he lies face down and doesn't even try to lift his head no matter how many toys I show him).  I tried putting him on my chest for tummy time thinking I may be softer than the floor and cause less spit up but, alas all I got for my trouble was a face full of sour milk!  The only time we get any tummy time now is if he wakes up from a nap early and we add a bit of A time before his next feeding is due.  Unfortunately, he is usually a bit cranky at this time and tummy time is a struggle.  Any suggestions?

I used the first 10 minutes after wake up for a bit of a 'wake up' routine.  I would just play a little with Claire in the cot and use this time to teach her new skills...

If he's having trouble digesting and then going onto his tummy...then I would stop doing it.  There's plenty of time for him to develop these skills in his own good time.

You found the answer yourself really...well done.

Hi there,
My little one is 16 weeks, and there is absolutely no way for me to get her on her tummy.  I have tried before feedings, after feedings, after her naps...and everytime get the same thing.  She starts to fuss, puts her arms out to the side.  Now when she knows I am turning her over, she immediately starts to cry.  If I leave her on her tummy, she will end up just spitting up.
If anyone has some other ideas, I would be interested in trying them.

You can use a rolled up towel under her chest to help keep her inclined while she's on her tummy.  If you're in a warm climate...take off her clothes and let her kick about on her back..then roll her onto her side..and then onto her tummy (again with the towel if that helps).  My LO never really liked tummy time either...she just gravitated to it in her own time.  It didn't seem to inhibit her development in anyway.

It took a while for my lo to enjoy any tummy time, I think its something they just gradually get used to over time. He also spits up when he's on his tummy and always has, although he doesnt seem bothered by it unlike your lo. I think its natural as his tummy is being squashed its bound to throw something up LOL I also like claires mum says used my V shaped pillow to support his top half at first to get him used to it. I would only try tummy time every other day and for a few minuted at a time and he eventually decided he liked it.

my LO 5mths old now, hated tummy time for ages too and would spit up, etc.  managed to get him handling it during massage after bath (only if didnt feed within hour before bath time). at about 3.5 months he started to handle a couple of minutes of regular tummy time and have gradually increased from there but still only handles 15 mins at most. we put him on his tummy after his nap and feed 15 to 20 mins after he has woken up (still spits up sometimes but nowhere near as much). so its really a EASAE. the towel under the arms really helped him build endurance, plus putting books in front of him and reading them to him helped distract him and also putting him infront of a baby DVD is the best as he barely realises he is on his tummy (i used to hate the idea of putting him in front of the tele but i figure if its only once or twice a day and he gets his tummy time in then its worth it  ::) ) HTH

Hi, I had the same problem - always spitting up during tummy time.  However, now I do the same thing as huntersmummyinoz (EASAE).  Due to needing to wait a 1/2 hour after giving zantac for reflux first thing in the morning, I've had to wait a 1/2 hour after waking up from naps to keep to a 4 hour Eating cycle.  During that time, we do tummy time in the crib.  With the reflux, I have a wedge under the sheet in the crib which actually helps him lift his chest up.  We started with only a couple of minutes of tummy time, but we've worked our way up to 10 minutes tummy time / practicing / learning to role...
HTH,
Michelle

I tried a rolled up blanket under his chest but he didn't care for that very much.  However, he seemed to tolerate being propped up on the nursing pillow.  It's not ideal because he is almost upright when propped up on the pillow as it is very puffy, but I'll take what I can get for now and be patient.  Hopefully as he grows he'll learn to tolerate tummy time better.

Thanks Everyone!
