Do Growth Spurts Last the whole first year?
« on: May 19, 2008, 18:38:01 pm »
I just reread Tracy's passage on LO having GS every 3-4 weeks. I think my LO is going thru one again--it has been 3 weeks and 2 days since the last one--can we say "my little Textbook baby"!? Just curious, though, how long do these regular GSs last? I was thinking of making a list with date ranges on it for every 3-4 weeks and I wasn't sure how long to do it for? Like, what happens when you add solids to the equation? Does that keep them filled up and they don't GS anymore? Any ideas?

Thanks!!

How old is your LO? They tend to slow down as the months go by. So after about 6 months you may not notice another one until around 9 months and then maybe 12 months.
GS still happen beyond 12 months and they want to eat more of everything!

Yeah for us were pretty regular until the 9 month one then it went down hill after that with ds refusing all food. So I am hoping the 12 month one will be good. After that they are pretty sporadic, you may notice a small one at 15 18 and 24 months but it may be more developmental as opposed to an eating one, dd just started to spout out words at 17 months and had 70 plus. At 18 months she just seemed to become more a toddler in the full sense of the word and on her 2 nd birthday refused her first nap, too busy chatting :-)
Once she passed 2 we didnt seem to notice them so much.

All very good info, thank you.  My DS is 19 weeks--nearly the 5 month mark! I was thinking maybe on the next growth spurt I would offer him some rice cereal...I'm sure that would fill him much better. Thank you for your input!

If you were to offer rice cereal around the recommended 6 month mark of course that's up to you. Just make sure that he has the full opportunity to do the growth spurt's job and develop your milk supply. That would mean always offering milk first, making sure he doesn't go to the breast full from milk and keeping solids quantities small.
A not uncommon pattern is a mum giving solids in response to a growth spurt, milk supply not developing perhaps quite as it should resulting in less calories overall (as cereal is sooo much lower in calories than milk) and that means more night wakings and potentially other problems.
It's actually better to introduce solids when a growth spurt is not happening just to ensure your milk supply is not negatively affected.
First solids is about first tastes and sensory experiences and quantities don't increase enough (and shouldn't) to mean a decrease in the need for milk for several months.

Thank you Stacy and Samuel's Mum--I did not know that or even think of it! I really appreciate you taking the time to explain to me--I still learn something new every single day. As I read back what I wrote, I realize I did not mention that I will be stopping breastfeeding at the 6 month mark. Do you happen to know how it would work with formula/growth spurts/solids--I know formula doesn't change as breastmilk does, so would I just give more at each formula feeding to give the calories? And then the solids will still be small portions and for taste and experimenting..?

Ok, thank you!
Well, this latest growth spurt is over. He is back to just about a 4hr EASY--sometimes 3.5 and usually once a day, 3hr. Not too bad. Keeps me on my toes, that boy!

After they go thru a GS of eating eating eating, do they then do a lot of sleeping? I noticed DS was taking some awesome naps after the feeding frenzy portion of the GS was over. Is that standard? I'm thinking it is but just checking  :D
