How to add extra oz when they don't finish the bottle
« on: May 19, 2008, 19:37:13 pm »
I'm trying to get my little one to (oh he's 4 months) to eat more during the day so he doesn't chow down so much during the night.

However, I can add more oz to the bottles - trouble is, he doesn't usually finish the bottles anyway.

What's a good way to get him to eat mroe during the day - take an oz away from one feed during the night, etc?

Hi and welcome to the BW website.

Can you post what your current routine looks like with feeds etc through the day as well as how many oz he has at night, so we can have a look for you.

Is your lo on any solids at all?

Thanks ! Glad to be here :)

It's a little erratic right now but here's what it looks like normally :)

Begins day at 6:30/7. Eats every 3 hours starting at around 8/8:30 (he won't eat first thing in the morning).  Has 2 naps a day (though he's in a funky thing right now where he takes a 30 min nap in the morning, then a 1 1/2 hour morning nap then a 2 hour afternoon nap) then a cat nap in early evening.

Bedtime routine starts around 6:30 - bath, feed, bed.

Dreamfeed at 10/10:30

Feeds at anywhere from 2 - 4 am.  Wakes periodically afterwards until 6:30 or 7.  Soother puts him back to sleep.

He downs all of his night feeds and then you can tell he wants more. He has 7 feeds or so in total. 5 -6 avg during the day, 7 during the DF and NW feed.

I'm not totally sure if this is appropriate for a 4 month old, but you could try to add some boiled (but cooled) water to his formula so that he still thinks he's eating the same but not actually getting the calories.  This could make him hungrier in the day.
Take away one oz of formula and add an oz of water.  Continue this for a few days, and see what happens.  Then do the same with 2oz and go from there...
