when to pump in schedule?
« on: May 23, 2008, 15:33:52 pm »
Hi ladies!  My ds2 is just over a week old and bfing is going well...3rd time's a charm I guess.  ;)  My question is when should I pump to not disrupt how well our bfing is going so far.  I return to work when he's 5-6 weeks old, but only part-time and he's actually able to come with me until he's 6 months old (it's a very small office).  After 6 months, he'll be in daycare.  I'd like to start pumping to have some for daddy to help out and give me a break as well as get ahead and stay ahead for later on (I know that's planning way far ahead, but I'd just like to have a stash for whenever it's needed).  I've heard to pump 1 hour after he feeds, is that 1 hour after he starts his feed or ends his feed?  And right now, at times, he eats every 2 hours and I don't know when those intervals will be so then I wouldn't have milk for him if I had just pumped right?  Mostly he goes 3 hours...but not always yet.  I read someone's post that they only pump on the days they don't work...is that possible and not end up with too much on the days you do work?  I work Mon/Wed/Fri and I'm having a hard time figuring out how to fit it into those days.  I've heard mornings often are most productive, but also the most chaotic getting 3 ready.  Thoughts?  Suggestions?  TIA
Stacie

Congrats on the new baby! Try pumping an hour after he started feeding, and you'll probably find you're able to pump more in the mornings.

Last week I started pumping once a day after the 7am ish feed.  I started on a day where I had particularly full breasts and he only took one side.  On subsequent days I'm doing it one hour after the 7am feed. But I also think it will be convenient to do it then as we won't have visitors at that time, but may at lunch or after dinner and kids are in bed, so it's quite convenient.

But I think it's best to wait a little longer and bf is better established...? someone else might be able to answer that one.

I love the security of having a stash!  Now to work out if he takes a bottle too!

Hi, are you double or single side feeding? If your single side you could pump while feeding in the morning if double you can pump an hr after start of feed.

3, im with you there and yes the mornings are hectic here to!!!!! I try and feed at 6.30 then get showered then kids showered, get dressed do breakfast and while there eating PUMP for 15mins (7.30am). Then do teeth, hair, lunches and make beds. Its now about 8.30 (could you fit in a feed here?) We leave for school a 8.45 so i feed when i get back at 9.30 (im on 3hr). We run a tight ship ;D but its the only way i can do it all.

Do you think this could work for you?

That makes sense, all the kids are used to what they have to do each morning so it's not such a big hassle to get them moving.
