boiling milk to reduce allergy
« on: May 23, 2008, 20:24:41 pm »
Has anyone tried boiling formula and/or breastmilk to reduce its allergic effect? I just read this in an article published by the North American Society for Pediatric Gastroentrology, Hepatology, and Nutrition:

When milk is heated, some of its proteins are denatured, thus becoming less allergenic.

Just curious. I may try it and post the results

I read that before but have always been scared to try it. Going to lurk along. I believe it should work. My ds is fine with yoghurt, but not with milk, so it makes sense it should be okay when boiled. Curious as to what other posters will say.

I would ask your doctor before you did that.  I think it would kill some of the very important nutrients in the breast milk or formula.

Just like heating milk in the microwave.  They tell you not to do that because it can cause burns, but also that it kills some of the nutrients.

Not sure which vitamins it is, but they cannot stand heat up to a certain temp.

I may be all wrong, but this is my thinking.

If your doctors says it is okay, then please do post your results.

Wendy, so gald you read this. I thought the post was talking about whole milk! Thanks so much for clarifying!!!!! Teach me to answer posts late at night!

Yes, not recommended at all to do that to breastmilk, I am sure the same goes for formula.

I completely agree with last two posts. I am not sure I could take the chance with whole milk either to be honest. Having said that my ds can't tolerate any dairy and his score on RAST test was very high for dairy. I would be very careful doing this if you decide to try it.
