A "how much milk" question
« on: May 25, 2008, 19:45:37 pm »
Mae is 11 weeks old.  We went to the cinema today and I left a 6oz bottle (thinking that would be more than enough!) of EBM for MIL to give to her.  Apparently she drained the lot in less than five minutes!

Would it be correct to assume she gets 6+oz from me when she has a normal feed?  No real importance, just curious :P

Here is a link you may find useful http://www.kellymom.com/bf/pumping/milkcalc.html

According to that article, a "high" intake would be 4oz for Mae's age!  So 6oz seems to be an awful lot!  Apparently MIL took the bottle out at about 4oz to wind Mae as I'd told her she's quite gassy, but Mae screamed the place down until MIL gave her the rest of the bottle.

I'm now wondering why she took so much?!?!?

Probably because its much easier to get milk from a bottle than it is from you!! Greedy little monkey  ;D

I'm a full-time pumper and DS is taking 3.25 oz per feed now (7 feeds a day).  When we first started with pumping, he would gladly suck away 6oz if I let him and then spend the next hour spitting up!  After a bit of trial and error we found that 3-4oz is all the food he needs to easily make it 3-4hrs to the next feed.  We think he often likes to just suck for longer for comfort so now as soon as the bottle is empty we shove a pacifier in his mouth and let him suck on that for a few more minutes until he spits it out on his own.  Then he's a happy baby who won't spend the next hour giving back all the milk I worked so hard to pump for him!

Oh, at 2m DS was only taking about 2-2.5oz per feed but he's a bit on the small side and was probably only 8-9lbs then.

Jo, I used that Kellymom calculator, like you it said 100 tops, so I left 125 ml (5oz I think) thinking I'd more than covered my bases, seems not - Norah chugged it quicker than a rugby player's first pint.

Piglets both!

Jo, I mistakenly froze 200ml in one bag - should I try it? Should we make bets?

Ooooh, I like your tactics there ;)

As for not taking a bottle, we tried her a couple of days before we had to leave her the first time.  She wolfed it down and tbh, I felt a more than a mild sense of betrayal :P

I know what you mean, you don't want them to starve, but they're not meant to like the plastic teat!!
