BF with sippy?
« on: May 27, 2008, 11:23:05 am »
Hello
My DD is just 8 months and ebf, she is happy to take water from her sippy at meals and during the day. My question is would it confuse matters if i put ebm in her sippy for her mid afternoon feed?? the reason i ask is i have been unsucessfull in getting her onto  a bottle. I feed 4x a day and she has 3 small meals. I was hoping for a little rest from bf, for one day time feed, so my dh could take her out. We are both still enjoying ebfing and would not be too upset if we couldn't manage it!. I just thought if she is taking water really well from the cup i or DH  could give her one of her feeds from it?

I would also really like some information on what happens in the next few months with feeds and how they are given as I am planning to return to work when she is a year old. What happends to those feeds during the day when they start nursery. Is it babies usual milk, cows milk or water given at a year? and how they are given, by sippy cup or bottle?.
Thank you

Hi, I agree with Kate.  Can't see why not.

It's recommend that babies get either breast milk or formula until 1 year of age.  Though, depending on where you are, this can vary greatly from culture to culture.

Usually at 1 year I'd say most babies have at least 4 feeds a day.  A first thing in the morning feed, an after 1st nap feed, after 2nd nap feed and then finally a bedtime feed.  Once a baby turns 1, and if you are wanting/needing to wean from the breast, you'll probably want to wean 1 feed at a time starting with whatever is more convenient for you or which feed your baby is least interested in.  Wait a week and then start with the next feed.

The mid day feeds will probably be replaced by a snack, probably with some dairy in there in the form of milk, cheese or yogurt.

Whether you give the milk in a bottle in a sippy cup is personal preference.  It sounds like your lo will do great to just move to a sippy cup and then it helps you not to have to wean from the bottle later.  If you plan to go to cows milk you may want to offer some now to get your lo used to the taste.  It took a while before my lo would do anything other than spit it out but now he loves it and I think our weaning will go a bit smoother because of it.
