Very short naps or none at all for 10 mos. old
« on: May 28, 2008, 13:46:49 pm »
I've read almost all the nap info. and am still not sure what to do about my LO. She wakes up around 6:15/6:30am, I try for Nap #1 at around 9/9:30am (I've tried earlier and later).  I try to get her down about 2.5/3 hrs. after waking.  She will sometimes nap for a very short time (30min) and then get up.  I always keep her in there for an hour.  I then try for Nap #2 abour 3/3.5 hours from when she got up (if she slept).  Sometimes I get a nap, sometimes I don't.  I've tried giving a bottle, trying to get to her before she wakes to lull her back to sleep, patting/shhhing, white noise, room darkening.  Yes, we have a routine.  We've rocked, sung, etc.  You get the idea.  We've seem to have done it all.  I'm considering going to one nap but am concerned she won't take that nap or it will be too short although what I'm getting isn't long either.  She does sleep all night, about 6:30-6:15/6:30pm.  On days she just won't take a nap, I put her down earlier.  Any advice?  I've been to MANY sleep boards and done thousands of searches.

This non-napping is affecting me in that I have anxiety every day about it and am considering seeing someone b/c napping consumes me.  Please help if you can.

hugs, and welcome to BW.

i know it's frustrating!  try to hang in there!

30 min naps mean OT and 45 min naps mean UT or OT, usually UT.  at 10 mo A time should be around 4 hours but it would be less following a short nap.

when you have tried shortening her A times how long have you stuck with it?  you really need to be consistent for a few days to a week with any routine change before you will see a difference.

great she's still sleeping through!

I've tried most things for about a week or two.  Today she woke up at 6:20am and feel asleep for her AM nap at about 9:30am.  She slept for 45min.  I now have her down at 2pm for her PM nap.  She's playing.  She doesn't cry when I put her down for a nap, only plays/talks. What does UT mean?  Sorry, I am new to this board.  I visited it when my daughter was really young and not napping but haven't been back.

Thank you for your help!  Can you give me some examples of what to do during the A time to help tire her out?

UT is undertired.  if she does a 45 min nap she may have needed slightly longer A time before it to make her tired enough to take a longer nap.  10 mo is a hard age as their A times are stretching.

this morning i would think she needed maybe another 10 or 15 min...if her nap had been at 9:45 am maybe she would have slept a bit longer?  i would try again to push that morning nap later.

what are you doing with her?
my DD is 9 mo and we: go to the park and go on the swings and slides, crawl around and play with her toys in the playroom, read books, sing songs, go for walk in the stroller (more for mummy  ;) but she likes looking at the birdies), practice standing up and stepping, meet friends with babies for lunch/playdates (i haven't done any mommy groups)...watch a baby einstein video if i'm too tired to do any of those things...

you could check out the activity board in this forum for more ideas.
