baby food recipes for babies allergic to wheat?
« on: May 28, 2008, 14:05:23 pm »
i am having a really, really hard time figuring out what to feed my liam, since every single time he's had a product with wheat he breaks out in hives. he's 9 months this week but we've been told not to feed him wheat again until his 1st birthday...

so... what can i do??

I have a wheat intolerance, and I have found ways around most things :) are you in the uk?

Over here, Tesco do a marvellous wheat-free range including good quality pastas, and some breads. For bread products and baking, I usually make my own with a wheat-free flour, I use the Doves Farm range, the recipes are on the packets, but you can use it in any recipe, just sieve the twice more than you would with regular flour. Dietary Specials are a company that also make wheat-free groceries including pizzas, breads (pitta, naan, a regular loaf, crumpets, muffins etc), and a whole host of other things. All of these companies have online websites with their products and recipes etc. The only thing I've really struggled to make is pastry, which always turns out brittle and heavy :(

It really depends what you want to feed him :-\ the famous sausage recipe is wheat-free, for any white sauce based recipes you can substitute wheat-free flour, many baby food recipes don't have wheat in anyway and it really makes you stay away from processed foods (sausages, burgers, pot-noodles - lol!)

HTH a bit?

i'm from canada but will see what our health food store has (if anything)... i guess i just read about others feeding bagels & toast & muffins, etc. & i get bummed b/c i can't do those things. he's starting to reject purees & wants to only feed himself but most of the food he can feed himself is slippery (like fruit or veggies) & i know some ppl coat it with wheat germ so they can pick it up - but obv. i can't do that... :(

Try crushed cornflakes, oatmeal, or rice krispies instead to coat slippery food :) there are wheat-free bread products out there, you might just have to track them down!

If you live near larger health food stores hopefully you will as surprised as I was to find out the growing selection of wheat free foods! But Safeway, Sobeys and Save-On Foods where I live all carry an ever growing selection too!

Save-On Foods has a fair amount of wheat/gluten free bread but it is kept in the freezers rather than on the shelf. Try looking in their "natural food" section if they have one.

Baby Mum-Mums are rice rusks that are sold in just about every grocery store (in baby section) and are wheat/gluten free and good for snacking.

And Kinnikinnick is a Canadian company that makes all products gluten/wheat free. Many grocery stores carry their bread in the freezer section. My MIL swears by their hamburger buns and bread.
Hope that helps!
