7 mo rolling over - wide awake
« on: May 29, 2008, 21:03:53 pm »
hi there....
i have searched through old posts for a similar situation but didn't find one so i am hoping someone can help. my 7 mo has generally been a good sleeper on easy, although still waking at night (usually once) to bf. i am hoping that will go away as he starts eating more solids. anyway...he just recently started becoming extremely mobile (almost able to crawl) and therefore is rolling over on to his back at night and during naps and lying there wide awake. he has no idea how to sleep on his back (started sleeping on his stomach at 4 months) and he also does not know how to roll back over and send himself back to sleep. i bought a video monitor last week to see what was going on because he kept waking up and when i would go into his room he was wide awake. i feel like i am creating a bad habit by going in and turning him back over (he smiles when i get there.) i then have to hold him down while he goes back to sleep or he will just roll over again. i am having a very difficult time. i also can't really use pu/pd because he is not really crying, just fighting me and trying to roll over again. sending him back to sleep is taking a long time (40-50 mins) or he sometimes just won't go back to sleep at all during naps. if he does start to cry during my holding him down, i don't really feel like pu/pd is an option because he seems to become more unsettled if i pick him up.
am i doing the right thing by trying to hold him down and let him soothe himself back to sleep? should i being doing some variation pu/pd that i don't know about?   please help - this has been happening at every nap and a couple times a night for almost 2 weeks. thanks so much.

This is a developmental phase and it will pass .. with time!  During the day, can you make a game out of teaching him to lie down and roll over...and back again?  Make it lots of fun for the whole family and give lots of encouragement.  Hopefully, he'll learn that he can do it in the cot also.

We just got through this stage. I think it lasted for about week and a half.  He was a back sleeper before the night rollings now he sleeps on his tummy.  It really doesn't last that long.  (and I went in his room and flipped him back over in the beginning too)

Hi
Our 7.5 mo was a back sleeper until this phase.  Fortunately it did only last about 2 weeks before he settled again.  He was rolling back and forth, kicking the sides of the cot and then getting stuck on his tummy.  Yesterday and todau he has been much easier to get to go to sleep, just turned his head to the side and off he went to sleep.  Hopefully this phase is over now!  Good luck.

Our 8 month old has been doing it too.

She is in a sleeping bag with a blanket tucked over her but she sometimes gets out of the blanket and rolls.

It will pass .. it will pass .. it will pass ;)
