Averysgirl, I saw your post in my thread in nightwakings.

And YES I have this problem too. My 17-week-old does four 45 minute naps or so if I can't extend. Sometimes, the gods smile on me and I get a two hour nap but its only about three times a week. I feel as if there must be some ideal conditions I can't read, something in particular that makes him take a two hour nap and I try in vain to recreate those conditions.

Never works.

Often, I can't extend as he screams blue murder. Shhh pat sometimes works, PU/PD makes him hysterical.

Hoping they grow out of it .....

--sigh-- averysmom-- my LO is still only taking 30-45 minute naps.  I am pretty sure now that it because he can't transition to the next sleep cycle.  He is so twitchy!!  No amount of patting/ shushing will get him comfortable into the deep sleep of the next sleep cycle.  I have been trying to extend these naps but end up wasting my time.
I feel like all I do is put him to sleep.  He also falls asleep very quickly but just can't stay asleep.  Often he wakes up after 20 minutes because of the jolts and such during that light sleep phase.
If I could only get a paci into his mouth.  He refuses that!
I hear my LO crying already.

It has only happened once and it didn't affect it, but he's already nw from milestones.  Anytime he happens to sleep longer then 2 hrs (rarely), I let him since I'm worried that he not getting the daily sleep he needs.  I'm sure if it happened often though, he would start to have a play time in the middle of the night!

Heya, after reading this thread I decided to deal with this as you have, by just trying for more 45 minute naps if he'll only take 45 minutes.

Y'know, giving up! (I prefer to call it "surrendering" because it sounds more spiritual and all. ;))

Having said that, I've been stretching my son's feeds to 3.5 hours, with one four-hour stretch in the morning, and letting the naps fall where they might.

It seems to be helping the nightwakings. However, it's an absolute trial to leave the house during the day because if I'm out and he doesn't nap properly, I'll have hell to pay later. Thank the Lord for online delivery.

So maybe we just had an OT baby? Egads. Hard to know. As I said, if only I could have more than one "perfect" day a fortnight where it all happens like it's supposed to.....

Hello. DS was a 45 min napper and still is.......he had 3 or 4 45 min naps when he was4,5,6,7 months but now that he is 13 months old only takes 2 45min to an hour naps a day....and he is a happy baby

As you become more clear about who you really are, you'll be better able to decide what is best for you - the first time around

Hi there,

My lo no 1 was a 30 - 45 min napper for 9 months. After three months of stress and trying to extend I gave up and just went with the flow. He was always a happy baby and it just saved a lot of angst and my sanity. Funnily enough he went to two naps at nine months and had 2 2 hour naps a day right through until 20 months when I moved him to 1 nap. He still does three hours a day  :) So even though it isn't great at the moment I'm sure things will get better for you. I'm dealing with the 45 min naps again now with my new one and will probably do the same thing in the end. Keep smiling  :)
