Starting lumpier puree's
« on: May 31, 2008, 12:42:59 pm »
We've been on puree's a while now and I want to make the move to lumpier food but everytime we try he gags and vomits :-\ The only success we've had is his breakfast muesli which is stage 2 and a bit lumpier. I know about BLW but it makes me a bit nervous tbh and Im not sure how he'd cope on it anyway with what he's like right now. Any tips?

Yup :D!

Self-feeding lumps poses less of a choking risk than spoon-feeding lumpy purees because the baby has more control over how much he puts in his mouth and when.

Don't get mixed up about choking and gagging - choking is dangerous, it's when food gets lodged in the trachea (windpipe) and the baby can't breathe; gagging is a natural reflex that prevents choking by spontaneously moving food from the back of the mouth to the front - it looks unpleasant, but is harmless, and the grown ups are significantly more distressed by it than the babies!

Please join the BLW support thread for more ideas and reassurances about the benefits of BLW, and to hear others positive experiences before you make a decision either way :)

When we tried lumpier food for the first time at 7 months he gagged, but after waiting a month or so he magically didn't.  I read somewhere that their swallowing reflex matures.  Or something to that effect.
