Multiple NWs due to heat
« on: June 02, 2008, 05:15:33 am »
Hi Girls,

We've had a terrible time of it these last few nights 8) It's got considerably hotter and I think this is the problem.

When DS goes to bed at 8pm it's really quite hot, so we put the fan on. He goes down fine but always wakes once or twice before 12 for a drink. Then at around 2am ish, which is when it gets a lot cooler he wakes constantly. I think it's actually because he's cold. He has always kicked blankets off and woken because he was cold until we found Grobags and our problem was solved. Unfortunately, even the summer Grobag is to warm for this time of the year here.
Last night, I lost count of the times I got up to tuck him back in. He's wearing summer short and t-shirt pyjamas and I can't put him in anything thicker as it would be too warm at 8pm when he goes to bed.

We do have air con in his bedroom (which we use in July/August) but we're a bit reluctant to use it now as it's not hot all night and we find it really drying.

What do you girls do who have very hot summers? I'm so pi$$ed off. I thought these NWs were behind us now, but these past few nights have been how it was before he was sleep trained :'( :'(
In the end, last night, I brought him in our bed :(, something I definitely don't want to repeat. He slept right through until 7.40 this morning - so it wasn't that he was in pain with teeth (as I thought this could be the only other problem ::))

Please, please, some advice is much needed. I can't go back to nights like these every night again :'(
Oh, and we were on the beach the WHOLE afternoon and he didn't stop running - so by rights, he should have just flaked out ALL night ???
Thanks,
Lis :-*

we have always had hot and humid summers.  we give the girls sippy cups in their beds so they can drink as needed (since babies we have done this) and when we lived in sydney we used evaporitive coolers in their room that had timers.  dh would put it on at bedtime and then before we went to bed he would set it to go off around 3-4am when it was usually coolest.  they don't work in brisbane as it is beyond humid here in summers so this past year we used A/C as needed and left them with a light blanket in case it got too cool.  if you can find a portable evap cooler i highly recommend them as they are small, low energy use and take the edge off the heat without freezing you.

Thanks girls.
If we did set the air con to go off, I'd have to get up and open his windows and doors as he'd roast otherwise!
Do you have the evaporitive coolers on with the doors shut?

I just went in his room and noticed there are loads of mosquitoes on the walls - so they might have been bothering him too
We'll see how it goes tonight. Air con needs servicing tho! Might have to do it this week!
OOh, I wanna go to England!!!

we left their doors ajar a tiny bit and the window open a couple of inches.

mosquitoes can be a major sleep buster - ouchy  did he have any itchy bites on him today?

I don't think he had any bites - but he's got a heat rash (so this could be irritating him) on his shoulders and shoulder blades and a bit of a rash from the sand/sea ::) And if you saw his legs it would be very difficult to spot any bites in amongst the many bruises and scratches :P

I think it would be too hot to put him in his 0.5 grobag at 8.00pm but if he wakes in early hours tonight - I'm gonna stick him in it ;)

Someone's coming tomorrow afternoon to sevice the air con, so at least it will be ready...

I wish I had some company on the beach Stacy - there's only so many holes you can dig in 6 months ::)
And I have a feeling Kaleb and Nicholas would get on very well!! ;D

Fingers and fannies crossed for tonight ;D

He only woke once last night for a drink of water ;D
We have tried leaving his sippy in the cot but he insists that it is not the place for it and puts it on the table.
A mild case of OCD!! Everything has a place ;D

Also getting really hot and humid here too and I just use the Air Con - not v economical to run it all night but we also had a mosquito problem - DD1 got a few bites.   But with the cooler air in there they are not so present.

I dress DDs in light long sleeve tops and pants and have the air con on to 22 degress C so it's constant throughout the night - this seems to be working....  Once the temp in the room itself drops to 22 degrees our AC will go off and just come back on at intervals when the temp starts going up again - not sure if that's what you have but starting to work for us.

Thanks Trisha - yes, our air con is on a thermostat.
Do you not find 22 degrees cold? We usually have ours on 27 :D

I was actually told by a friend of mine whos a nurse that 18 to 20 degrees is recommended up to age 2.....   not sure but 22 works for us as I dress them accordingly.  They have legs and arms covered and a light blanket and they seem to be fine.   If your LO doesn't wear much then 27 may be ok - seems a bit high to me....how hot is it outside?  It's about 30 degrees C here now and we keep the house at an avg 23/24 and rooms at 22/23 for sleeping...

Well, it seems that an ear infection was the cause of his NWs :o

Poor thing had a temperature all afternoon on Tuesday and on taking him to the Drs on Wednesday we found out it was his ear.
Strange, as he hasn't had a cold with this ear infection.
Dr said to try without antibiotics for a few days to see if it will clear up by itself - so we'll see..........
