Egg before 1 year injection
« on: June 03, 2008, 19:09:52 pm »

Hi there,
At my daughters (now 10 months) last check up I was told for her injection at 1 year she had to have egg as it is egg based.
All the guidelines say egg yolk is ok but egg white should not be introduced until after 1.
Does any one know if it is necessary to give her all of the egg or is the egg yolk what needed to prepare her for the injection?
My dd hasn’t had any reactions to any food so she is not prone to allergies, did any one else give them l.o's the whole egg before 1 without any problems?
Thansk in advance.

I don't understand - are you supposed to FEED her eggs to get her ready for the injection?  I never heard of that.  Or is it just that this will be her introduction to whole egg?  If you are supposed to try her with an egg to see if she reacts, I would think that 3 days before the jabs would be plenty of time to see if she is allergic, and close enough to the 1 year mark to make no difference developmentally.  We started dd on whole eggs the same week she turned 1, I can't imagine a few days one way or the other would make any difference, it's not like something magic happens exactly on the birthday.

Makes sense to me!

ha ha you are right but I got the impression I should be feeding her egg to prepare her for it..maybe though they meant to see if she gets a reaction to eggs she should have them first so they know not to give injection yet...
it was actually DP that went to the last check up so all I know is I am supposed to give her egg before that injection as it is egg based....must give the PHN  ring and see.
Thanks for your replys

Feeding her egg repeatedly will not affect whether she is allergic or not.  If she is, she is, you can't make her UN-allergic.  I guess testing her on egg is probably a good idea, though, that way if she reacts to the jab you will have eliminated one possible cause.

Never heard that recommendation before, but it actually does make sence in a way I suppose. I mean you'll want to know ahead of time if there is an allergy. Eating egg it'll get out of the system faster then with an injection I suppose.

DD had eggs by the time she was 1.. and has loved them ever since..

you'd have to know about egg allergies for flu shots too.. the cultures are grown in eggs. There is a couple others too, but I'm not sure what ones.

Well found out the reason...it is just to know if they have a reaction to eggs. IF they did, the injection used to be given in the hospital so they could keep an eye on them but think its old school advice and there are just very little traces of egg so its not done any more.
thanks everyone for reply!
