How to adjust 4.5 mo old to new time zone
« on: June 09, 2008, 01:10:42 am »
We live in Chicago and will be travelling to CA on Friday, staying there for 10 days.  My 4.5 mo old is on a great routine/schedule right now.  She's on a four our routine and sleeps from about 6:30 - 7:00 at night until about 6:00 the next morning.  My question is ... does anyone have any suggestions on how to adjust her naps, feeds, bedtime, etc?  Currently she eats at 6:30, 10:30, 2:30 and then between 6:00 & 6:30 and then it's off to la la land.  With the 2 hour time change her first bottle would be at 4:30 AM and she'd be going to bed at 4:30 - 5:00 if the afternoon.  YIKES!

Any suggestions, tips, words of advice would be appreciated!
Beth

Hi there:
When people travel, their bodies function as if they were still in their own time zone. Hence, you can feel pretty crummy until you've adjusted.
I would recommend keeping your watch set to your home time zone, and continuing to to follow your usual routine the first day. The second day, adjust the routine by 45 minutes or so (less if acute hunger sets in), writing down the new times. The third day, repeat the above. Also, if there are problems with too much light in the a.m. or p.m., make sure the level of light is appropriate for your baby's needs to get to sleep.
When you get home, reverse the process!
Hope that helps!
