do you nurse more often after shots?
« on: June 09, 2008, 20:22:03 pm »
Do you try to have your LO nurse more often after getting shots?  On the general info. sheet from the Dr. it says to be sure they're getting enough fluids after shots - so I would assume this means to up the number of times and/or length of nursing??  We just got done with my DD 6 month shots.  The last couple of times getting shots (2 months and 4 months) she seemed to want to nurse more frequently on her own the day of and day after (possibly due to comfort) but this time she seems to be doing ok with the shots (doesn't seem as fussy or as uncomfortable) so I am wondering if I should just nurse her more often anyway to get extra fluid in her??

She will still indicate herself when she needs more nursing, so unless she's asking for it I would say no. In fact my boy nursed less at his 6 month shot, since he was cranky from it. I would go by her cues and try to stay on routine as much as possible.
The reason the sheet says to make sure they get enough fluid is that sometimes kids feel sick from the shots and don't eat or drink at all. As long as she does her normal feedings (or even a little less) she'll be fine. If she flat out refuses then more often BF is needed to keep her fluids up. By now she' also old enough to have some boiled water as well...

Ok.  Thank you.  I'll just keep her going on her regular routine then unless she seems to need differently.  That makes sense - that some eat less and possibly not enough due to the shots thus the need to make sure they are getting enough.
