Hi I have a beautiful 7 week old baby boy (my second) and after a really good first two weeks am struggling to get him into a routine.

Mybaby boy originally found it difficult to get up wind (giving infacaol now) and then to pass down below (baby massage is working) but now I am wondering if he has bit of reflux - after a feed (breastfeeding) and some activity when I put him down with sleep cues he either moans and gets wind up, or kind of wretches and burps or once or twice a day brings up small amounts of curdled (and smelly) sick - more discomfort than pain as no hysterical crying but what is happening especially during the day is that the constant wind/acid thing pushes him past his sleep window and we have had a couple of days with no sleep at all which have made settling on a nightime difficult.  On a night time I stay with him until he is asleep as this can take an hour as he keeps needing to be winded/or picked up due to acid - I am sticking to the whispering principles and not rocking him to sleep etc. just staying with him - this is fine as toddler is in bed but I can't devote this one one one time during the day and end up randomly putting him in his bouncy chair or he falls asleep being cuddled or in the pram or car.  On a night he takes shorter feeds and generally goes back to sleep within 10 mins of feed - when he occasionally takes a bigger feed it unsettles him.  It was 6 months before I got my eldest into a routine and i really wanted to help baby boy into a routine sooner for the whole family also he is such an angel I am worried that because of this problem I am creating bad habits just by trying to resolve this problem - does anyone have any tips?

Hi - random from a time perspective every day is different as each day is starting at a   different time between 5.45am and 7.00am. I have been trying to keep him on a 3 hour easy routine although only the E is consistent throughout the day.  The A starts OK but once a sleep has been missed (as happened this morning) we just get into a mess.  This is what has happened today although I think he's having a growth spurt today!

5.25am Feed
5.45 Back to sleep
7.00 awake
7.15 top up feed
7.45 - 8.30 Activity
8.30 in cot drifted off to sleep after 5 mins awoke for a burp.  Back to sleep after 15 mins awoke for another burp (9.15am) and then would not go back to sleep and cried until I fed him at 9.45 as I began to suspect hunger was more critical for him than sleep (this is the problem due to the wind/acid thing we get so far into the S time that he starts to notice he is hungry (I think)
9.45 Feed
10.45 Sleep (30 Mins) again crying and again I thought hunger
11.35 Feed - fell asleep after feed on me and is now still asleep in his bouncy chair and I am off to wake him and feed at 3.00pm to try for a 6pm feed and 7 pm top up before bed.

I am sure the feeds today have been to increase milk supply as he has taken a full feed at each one.  Although he has now gone 3.5 hours (?)  I am pretty comfortable with how his routine should work but am wondering whether it's pointless trying to force the routine if the sleep bit won't happen in his cot - because i am so concerned about him being overtired by not sleeping I'd rather he sleeps anywhere.  I am at the doctors for 6 week check tomorrow and wondered about baby gaviscon I have his cot on blocks although he was better when we elevated his mattress with a pillow but I took that out as he kept sliding down...I ordered a proper wedge yesterday and am hoping that a combination of the two will help.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated x

sorry you do not have answer yet.
How are things?
From a 7 week old you cannot really ask too much, he just gets used to the world. So you use shuhs-pat?

Thanks Efka.   Not really needing too much shush-pat main problem is once he's asleep he wakes up.  Have been to doctors and got infant gaviscon although now he is really constipated and windy - spoke to Doctor today and have reduced dosage to see how it goes.  I have decided for his and my benefit to keep him downstairs during the day in his bouncy chair to sleep and follow EASY and to continue to put him to bed at 7.00pm so that at least he is used to being in bed at night.  I'll work on the daytime routine in a few weeks when he's a bit older and more importantly my husband (a school teacher) is on summer holidays and able to supervise my toddler, Fred.  this means he'll be 13 weeks old and we'll have 6 weeks to crack it!!

Hi there fredsmama, wow it all sounds very similar to what our little DD went through when she was that age. She had 'silent reflux' and would always spill after she had bf. She took a long time to wind and would spew up some of her feed, usually a thick, smelly, curdily vomit.
We initially used Infacol and then went on to use Baby Gaviscon. I don't know if this made much of a difference but our doctor said it might have relieved some of the discomfort she was feeling after the acidic vomit had come up. My doctor also asked me what I was eating and said that cucumber and chocolate could upset DD's tummy so I stopped eating these - it was particularly hard to stop eating the chocolate!!!!!

DD used to do her usual mantra cry to go down to sleep but then sometimes she would wake and stir, 40mins later, and make noises and then go back to sleep so sometimes her usual 'required' amount of sleep was rather disrupted. I didn't really do the pat/sh as this tended to wake her up completely. I just used to sometimes sit by her bed for 20 mins when she went down and help her out with her pacifier. She didn't really know how to use it and when she turned her head to the side it would just pop out! I am not a huge fan of paci's but this might actually have helped her out, now that I look back on it, as it might have helped her to suck and dislodge some of that yucky vomit she had brought up.

In terms of the disrupted sleep I would still get her up using the 3hr EASY even if she hadn't been asleep for very long so she was still kind of in a routine. I don't know if this was the right thing to do but she is a great little sleeper  and very settled.

We also raised her bassinette and mattress; we used phone books as we found pillows and blankets too high. When she was in her bassinette the mid-wife told us to raise the actual bassinette so we popped them under the legs of the bassinette but when DD moved to a cot we put the phone books under the mattress. It didn't raise it alot but we just made sure that her feet were at the bottom of the cot so she couldn't slide down under the blankets. We often used a frontpack carrier too which is great as it allows bubs to remain upright and it gives you a free pair of hands to deal with your toddler.

I was told by our mid-wife and doctors that it would start to get better when she was about 3 months old as apparently their little esophagus start to develop abit better and they are better at controlling their heads therefore everything is more upright. We used to make sure that for about 20 mins after she had feed that she was resting upright in her little bouncinette, minus the bouncing her!! so that her feed could, as we called it, 'trickle down to her toes'.
We were about to take her to the paedatrician at 3 months and then it just kind of went away pretty much over a few nights.

I was also really worried about creating bad habits but remember your little one is still just really young and still adjusting to the world so I wouldn't worry too much about creating any bad habits and yes I would also not worry too much about where bubs sleeps. I wish I had been abit more 'chilled out' about this. I figure if they are sleeping they are restful and relaxed and it doesn't matter too much at this stage where they sleep. Just tackle one thing at a time.

I hope this helps and has not been too confusing and sorry about the length of it I sure can talk!!!!!
Good luck
