Back to green poo?
« on: June 10, 2008, 23:36:36 pm »
About a month ago, my lo (9 weeks) started having lots of fussiness after eating and frothy green poos. I figured out I had overactive letdown/oversupply and went to feeding on one side for 3 hours, then switching sides for the next 3 hours. Poos went back to yellow and she was much happier.

All of a sudden her diapers have gone back to green in the past couple of days! I haven't changed anything about the way I am feeding her...still 3 hours on one side then switching sides. They are sometimes mucousy and sometimes frothy. I have been racking my brain to think if I have been eating anything different, but I can't think of anything?

I'm wondering if I should increase the time I feed her from one side, maybe to 4-5 hours and see what happens, but I'm also wondering why it would change again? Anyone have any experience with this happening?

Is lo fussy again, or is it just the change in poop?  If there's not change in demeanor, it may just be a normal variation in poop.  There's lots of variety in "normal" for poop, even for the same baby.  You may want to take a look at this https://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=114674.0 for some... examples.  ;)

4-5 hours as a feeding interval at her age would be incredibly unusual and I really wouldn't recommend it. It would be very unlikely she'd get enough milk overall in 24 hours due to her stomach size. You don't really want to 4hrs until you approach 4 months at the earliest and even then many don't do 4 hours. I really would stick at 3 hrs (less in a growth spurt) for now.

As the PP says I wouldn't worry about it if she's seems fairly happy and intervals are pretty similiar.

It might be a mild virus and this is her only symptom.
She might be reacting to something unususal in your diet? (rarer).
It doesn't sound like there's anything different about the way you are organising breastfeeding.

Oh dear, I meant feed her from the same side every time she wants to eat in a 4-5 hour block, not feed every 4-5 hours. :)

She seems to be happy after eating, the change in output is the only thing different. I guess I was just concerned b/c of what happened last time when the green poo began to show up! Thanks for the help!

Hi

Candice, that is a Really good link you sent :) I would have loved to see it before.

Missmeggy, i am having the same issue with my Lo. All of a sudden her poo went to greenish and much more liquid.(i put also more effort now to feed her from the same breast longer/ more often so that she gets the hind milk) Her poo now is getting slightly more yellow, but still more liquid than before.  One idea i got from posting my "problem" on this website was that maybe she was drinking more fore milk as she was/is hot ( we have some hot weather out here), so she is thirsty (not necessary hungry). It makes sort of sense. How is the temperature where you are?

Also, from the FAQ, i have found the following links usefull:

Green Poo : https://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=59243.0

fingers crossed for the return of yellow poo ( for both me and you  ;))

Angela

4-5 hr block! OK That makes sense!!!! Block nursing may help if it is oversupply. Are you seeing other symptoms? It basically reduces your supply so I wouldn't do it if you are not seeing other signs.

Angela,
You know, it has just gotten much hotter here within the last week...I didn't think of that! Good tip! :)

Samuel's mum,
I'm not noticing any of the other symptoms of oversupply like I had earlier - the fussiness during/after eating, choking, etc. She does seem to spit up quite a bit 20-30 minutes after she's finished eating, don't know if that is related? I don't want to jeopardize my supply though, so perhaps it's just a green poo phase.

I would hold off on more block nursing for now and give it a few more days. Try a bit more gentle burping than usual after the feed as excess gas might contribute to spit up and sometimes when babies are a little older and have an efficiency burst they can get gassier again if they've suddenly got faster. Is her sleeping still the same?

She has started sleeping longer stretches at night, usually 7-8 hours. This has been just recently in the past week. Thanks again for your help and suggestions!
