Help with weaning my nearly 9 month old off the breast
« on: June 10, 2008, 23:50:33 pm »
Hi I'm new on here but was wondering if anyone out there can offer some advise. My DS is 9 months old next week.

I have decided to wean him off for a couple of reasons. He became uninterested in breast milk about 4 weeks ago and was hardly having any milk (he is very good on solids). He dropped down to 3 milk feeds a day. I have also had mastitis 4 times in the past 6 months which has been very painful. Three times on one side and once on the other.

Should I just stop or slowly wean down? For a couple of days I breast fed him twice and he had formula at night. Yesterday was the first day I haven't breast fed him at all and I am feeling engorged. He is drinking the formula fine so don't really want to offer the breast anymore... or should I?

I think that you would need to go slowly, given your history of mastitis.  An abrupt stop can lead to engorgement (as you know), and that *can* lead to clogged ducts & mastitis.  (Not necessarily, but it can.)  If you do go teh slow route, that means either offering or pumping in gradually decreasing amounts.  Do you have access to a pump?  That sounds like it might be your best option.  {{hugs}}
