Should I be giving DD cold water?
« on: June 11, 2008, 18:43:59 pm »
Hi

Am first time mum and currently have 3.5 month old DD.  She is exclusively bottle fed (ready made formula cartons) and her weight is spot on for her age.  But she does have bad wind and is quite a sicky baby.

However I see others feeding their baby cold water.  I have only done this twice, when she was constipated.  Should I be doing it more often?

When in general should u give babies water?

Thanks all.
ps live in UK where it is not too hot

Hiya generally at this age there is no need to unless baby is constipated, so I wouldnt give it as a rule unless she is constipated, until you start solids, the exception being VERY hot days which we dont often have in the uk (sadly lol) xx hope that helps

Oh and with the wind, does gripe water/infacol help?  Is she generally happy apart from being a bit windy and sicky?

I never gave ds extra water until he started on solids around 5 1/2 months.  There is no need to unless they are constipated, it is really hot or they are taking solid foods.  When he did start with water I offered it in a sippy cup along with his meals.  (I am in the UK too).

I used dentinox drops with dd when she was windy - you can add it to the milk which is quite handy.  I never used anything with ds although he was a bit of a farty baby!!  He grew out of it as he got older and his system matured.

DH and I were talking about this today, and we don't know what to do.  We are in Chicago, and it is really blasted hot here right now.  90F+ the last couple of days.  And, its just June, so its not going to get cooler anytime soon.  Most of the time, DS (14 wks) and I are in the cool confines of our house with a/c, but I do like to at least take him for a walk in the afternoons, "to blow the stink off" as my mom says and because his catnap is usually erratic anyhow, we may as well be moving.  Should I be giving him any water to avoid dehydration??

As long as the formula is mixed properly your LO wont need any extra water. Giving them water gives them empty calories and takes away from what they need.

As for wind, we found Oval worked best for us

I give her ready made milk and don't use formula.  Is that a good or bad thing??  I do it as I am lazy, but easy conscience to DH (as it expensive) on grounds of hygiene..which is popycock!

Re wind - do people still give babies stuff for wind when they are older and have outgrown colic?? She doesn't really cry much with wind as much as she used to.  It is now only when trying to push out a fart.  Unfortunately the fart attacks happen in the middle of the night...

Ready made Formula is fine, its just pre mixed :)  I used infacol to help with my dd's wind sometimes even when she was 7 months old, it is unusual to have wind when they're that little bit older I suppose, but heck as an adult I get painful wind sometimes :)
