DS not happy with swaddle? or something else?
« on: June 14, 2008, 14:46:05 pm »
We have just started with EASY about a week or so ago, DS (6 weeks) is doing fairly well with the time line outlined in the book, we just tweak it a bit depending on what time he wakes in the a.m. (between 6 and 7). We found swaddling to be the key to nap and bedtime, he will winddown and practically be asleep when put in the crib and asleep shortly there after, without any shh/pat in the crib. However last night after a feeding (2:30) and 45 min into his first nap today, he busts out of the swaddle and wakes up...and screams, jerks and bangs his head on my chest for a few minutes when reswaddled. Once calm, I put him back down and he begins to bust back out very aggressively, eventually working into another fit of frustration. After his 10:00 feeding, he just floppy sleepy baby. Do I put him back to sleep?
Mind you he will initially welcome the swaddle and winddown routine and off to sleep he goes...
The shh/pat in the crib doesn't work, not to mention I can not physically bend over at that angle for too long. Normally I just sit quietly and pat him for a minute or two until he is asleep, no shh'ing required.
Please help, I am so afraid that this behavior will spill over into my winddown routine where the swaddle is imperative.

do you think he's waking because he's busting out of the swaddle?  Many babies seem to fight the swaddle, but what's important to remember is that at his age, he does not have independent control over his limbs - so he's not consciously deciding to move them wildly to fight being swaddled, in fact, that flailing is really a reason for swaddling.  Have you tried something like the Miracle Blanket or the kiddopatomus swaddle-me blanket?  It's much more challenging for bubs to get out of those.

The 45 min waking is a natural sleep cycle transition, so if he's gotten himself unswaddled, then at 45 min as he transitions, the jerking of his body will wake him up.

Thank you for your quick response, I was using a large receiving blanket to swaddle him in and for his next nap tried a Safety First Swaddle blanket and I ended up having to wake him up for "E" at 1:00! I just put him down for his next nap, using the new blanket. He was the most "awake" I have ever seen him when putting him in the crib after settling time and he fussed a bit, I kept patting and sure enough, 20 minutes later and he is out, hopefully until 4:00!
I also read some other boards about A time and being careful of too much A, so we just sat out on the deck.
Thank you again!
