waking mid nap
« on: June 17, 2008, 11:59:44 am »
My 15 month old has been waking mid nap for the past week. He switched to one nap at around 12 months and we are still going through the transition. A few weeks ago he lengthened his nap to 2 hours some days but for the most part 1.5 hours. This week he has been waking at 1.5 hours or earlier, crying for 3-7 mins and then back off to sleep for another 40-60 mins for a total of 2.5 hours. Is this due to OT? He is teething his canines and has been for 2 weeks I think.
His routine is:
wake: anywhere from 5:45-6:45 but lately 6 am and today 5:20 :(
nap 11:30 to 12 depending on wake in am to anywhere from 1:15-2:30 pm
bedtime 5ish hours from nap waking....has been 7:30 lately.

He gets around 13 hours in 24. Is a 2.5 hour nap too long? Is that why he has been waking at 6 or earlier or is he OT or can I assume it's due to teething. I do give Motrin (ibuprofen) before naps and nights.

Nobody can help? He woke again today, 1 hour into his nap cried for 3 mins and then slept another 50 mins or so. I just don't know where to go from here.

My girls used to do this when they were teething so imo as long as he's going back to sleep, I would not do anything about it. Canines and molars are brutal!!!

In regards to him sleeping for 2+hrs.... well if you see that a long nap leads to an early morning wake up, then I would probably wake him 2hrs into the nap and do bedtime 5hrs later. This should help with him sleeping an extra 30mins in the morning.

They are brutal. He just cries out of nowhere. Like yesterday, he was sitting in his high chair with his hands in his mouth screaming. I don't see anything yet, but it has been going on for 2 weeks at least. So this doesn't mean overtired?
The 2.5 hour naps have lead to early wakings but I do also move his bedtime later to compensate. The other day he slept:
wake 6:10 (after going to bed at 7:40 pm)
nap 11:56-2:12 with a short 5 min waking
7:30 bed
wake at 5:18 for the day. I thought that his was due to overtiredness and not too much nap time but maybe I am wrong? He did go back off from 5:30 and on until 6 then:
nap from 11:40-1:25 with a brief waking at 1 hour
bed at 6:30 asleep 6:45
waking at 4:45 gave Motrin then straight back off until 6:17 am. Was this am's waking due to too much sleep in 24 hours?

I am so confused. Is he getting too much sleep or not enough? Is 13 hours in 24 ok?

The am waking could be due to teething as well. To answer your questions.... 13hrs in a 24hr day is just about right when they are down to 1 nap.

I was going to say that my DD's had EWs when she was cutting molars. It's like she was a in a light sleep stage and the pain just pushed her over the edge. The EWs stopped when the molars cut through.  Good luck!

When he cut all of his other teeth including molars, sleep was brutal. In general his sleep is bad, but when teething it is comically so. Up every hour, short naps, he is just a mess. Last night I did a test to see if it is really OT or just pain so I didn't give any pain meds and at 11 he was up screaming. He hasn't woken at that hour yet, just at the 5 am hour so it kind of made me relieved that he is teething and not OT. I gave him pain meds at 11pm and he slept until 6:20am!But today he still woke mid nap, cried for a minute and then back off for a total of 2 hours. I am so perplexed as he hasn't done the mid nap wake since he was having 30-45 min. naps.

Tonight he is miserable, crying for momma, runny nose and so clingy. I just hope he cuts these things soon so we can all get some proper sleep.

JUst want to add that Leorah wakes early and wakes mid naps when teething but will overall sleep longer if she has the pain meds, for us if she has a NW and we give her meds it is better than her not because then she will wake early for the day  :P

Last night was a bit better. He fell asleep at 7:15 after a good long 2 hour nap (which is long for him!) and woke briefly for pain meds at 3:30am and then woke at 5:45 am off and on until 6:30. I wonder if he is getting immune to the pain meds as he wakes crying "momma, momma" something he only does when sick/teething. I hate giving him so much and he hasn't even popped a tooth. I know he is going to soon as his sleep is still so interrupted I just wish it was sooner than later.

I know how you feel about the meds but if they can sleep better then it is worth it, I always feel better about it if a tooth is breaking through but it is usually the moving around and the pressure before breaking that causes most of the disruptions. We have actually had a bit of a teething break but we had a 1 hour nap today and some biting and dribbling so we will see, she hasn't needed any pain meds in a while so I am just not sure  :-\

Hi hope your DS's canines break through soon, they were brutal for Leorah and took ages to break but once one broke two more quickly followed and then the last a few weeks later, I hope it's better for you  :)

Thanks so much. I just wish there was more I could do. It just kills me to see him in pain and so tired. Sorry about the one hour nap. I hope my DS sleeps longer than that as I know he really needs it, especially today. I am convinced that today is the day he'll finally pop one as he is soooo drooly and red cheeked more so than ever before.
