Do I need to shorten 2.5 yr old's nap?
« on: June 18, 2008, 19:07:25 pm »
Hello girls,

Just a quickie -
DS normally wakes between 7 - 7.30am and naps for 2 hours btw 1 - 3.
The problem is that he's taking longer and longer to go to sleep at night ::)
How much sleep does your 2.5 yr old have?

He's usually in bed for 8.30 and straight to sleep, but recently he's calling "Mummy, mummy...", (wanting water or tucking in) until 9.30pm ::) This has coincided with the warmer weather and much lighter evenings.

What do you do when your LO calls out? Tonight, after going in 3 times, I just let him call and call and eventually, he went to sleep at 9.30pm.
Should I not go in at all from the beginning? It's probably stalling tactics - right? Maybe wait until he starts crying and then do WI/WO?

Thanks girls,
Lis :-*

It could be a stalling tactic or it could be that he needs less day sleep.  DD was taking too long to go to sleep at night so I limit her nap to 1.5 hrs at around 28 mos.  So after she started to skipped her nap every now and then and I knew that we were in a long process of 1-0 nap transition.  Not very fun as I was getting very pregnant but it did give me a chance to nap in her room while she quietly plays or nap with me.

HTH a little

I think most kids of this age who are still napping need a good 6 hours of A time before they are tired again. So a 3pm wake up does mean a 9pm bedtime at the earliest.
I would probably start by cutting the nap to 1.5hrs and see what happens. Even an hour maybe.
Bedtime will get a lot easier when he isn't undertired. Sam dropped his nap just before 2.5 and bedtime became a breeze.

Hope you don't mind me joining in but I was going to write the same post myself; my 27 month old little boy Dom is usually really good at going to bed but recently has been using all sorts of stalling tactics at bedtime, or laying in his cot talking and singing for ages after we've left him. He still really needs a nap but think I just need to cut it down a bit.

Thanks for your info Emma, I'll bear it in mind that he needs 6 hours A time and try and work our naps around that. I only let him have half an hour tho on Monday and we had a horrendous night with him waking 4 times during the night. Think he was seriously ot. I'll go for an hour I think and work it from there

Thanks (and good luck Lis!)

We went through this about 3 months ago and so we started limiting naps, then she started cutting her naps and this all was OK for about a month.  then suddenly she needed more sleep again and she's now back to 2.5-3hr naps, waking at 3pm and back asleep at 7pm for upto 14hrs at night.  today she fell asleep on the sofa at 3.30pm and I woke her at 5pm and she was in bed at just gone 7pm.

all I know for sure is that we have to take each day as it comes these days, some days no sleep then the next usually a long nap and sometimes we get it wrong and she's overtired and other days she's not tired till 8pm.  I try to remind myself it's all an adventure ;)  at least we're not alone hey!

WOW I am so glad to read all this, my LO is 26 months and for a few weeks now has been a nightmare at bedtime, she wakes at 7am, her nap has been 1pm - 3pm, then we aim to get her in bed for 8pm, but the last two weeks she has rocked around her cot til 930 - 10 pm at night,  I suppose I should reduce her nap???? From 2 hours to 1.5 ?
I will miss the 2 hours!

Thanks girls!

But hey I will miss my 2 hour siesta ;D

Thanks for reminding me about 6 hrs awake time - that gives me a guideline ;)

Actually, it's soo hot here now, that a 9pm BT would really suit us at the moment - it's just too light and hot for bedtime at 8pm 8) It also means we can go to the beach late afternoon - it's a really nice time to go to the beach - much cooler. And that way, I can still have a siesta ;)

I don't think he's ready for no nap at all yet - he couldn't make it through the day.
Stacy, what age did Kaleb stop napping?

This morning, Ds woke up at 8am after eventually falling asleep just after 9pm. He probably only had an hour nap as we were in Athens for most of the day yesterday. So as Stacy suggested, I'm looking at 12 hrs sleep per 24 hours

Glad to hear we're not alone!

Thanks for all the advice girls

Right after B turned 2 we had to limit his nap to 1.5 hrs.  Now we can even skip some days and he doesnt totally fall apart ;)

My DD1 also started having crib parties up until 10 or even 11 some nights just after her second birthday.  She was at the time taking a THREE hour nap, though, so really, it's no wonder.  We needed only to trim it to 2 hours, from 12:30-2:30, then put her to bed at 8:30.  She'd wake at around 8 am or so, too.  She'd always needed a bit more sleep than average.

She is now nearly 4 (will be in September) and still napping most days, from about 1:30-3:30, though she wakes closer to 3 some days.  She goes to bed at 9 or so and is asleep by 9:30 most of the time (sometimes stalls until 9:45, though).

Honestly, for us, even though it means a later bedtime, I much prefer keeping the nap for as long as she'll take it, both for the break for me, and the fact that she's a wreck by 7 pm if she doesn't nap and goes wild, hitting her sister, being very disagreeable, etc.  When she used to skip her nap before age 3 and 3 months, she'd have NWings, too.

I say keep your siesta and go with a later bedtime if that's what works for you.  My relatives in Israel all follow this pattern, with everyone taking naps at mid-day and then staying up late in the evening-- it wasn't uncommon to have young kids up as late as 10 pm as a matter of course.  As long as your DS is getting enough total sleep (I'd say about 12 hours is right-- I think 11 hours is too little for the vast majority of kids this age) and sleeps well when he is sleeping at night, then by all means do what works for you!

Thanks girls.
I think we'll keep the 2 hour nap during the summer and then cut it back in the winter so we can do an earlier BT then.
Thanks you all for your great advice!

Funny you should say this, a couple of my mom friends (from the Middle East & India) thought I was crazy for cutting back on dd's nap to get a 7:30 bedtime.  It really is a cultural thing when it comes to how and when you get your children to sleep.

Lis, if I was living in such a beautiful place with gorgeous weather, I would do the same.  Heck I'll probably have a siesta myself!  ;)

Stacy, Lilah's gone through periods where she naps maybe less than half the time, but I keep putting her down for a nap, insisting that she stay in for 45 minutes of quiet time.  If she doesn't want to sleep, she can read books, draw, or do something else quiet.  After that, if she's not asleep, she gets to come out of the room.  So far, she has always gone back to napping.  Long may it last!

Yep, you definitely can't force the nap, some days even though I know she's tired and needs one, Lilah just won't nap.  But with the quiet time, I still get a bit of a break mid-day and we get an earlier bedtime.
