I know you should not leave your LO to CIO however should you leave them to cry if you think it is Mantra crying?  If i go in to comfort him his crying gets worse!

Mantra cries are usually quite specific.  Your mummy instincts *should* tell you when its the "I NEED YOU NOW" cry.  Mae is the only one of mine who's needed a little cry before sleep and like you say, if I go in there, she just gets really irate and doesn't sleep.  From what I remember, a mantra cry should sound kinda rhythmic (although Mae's is a little different - the only way I know is just that I "know" - does that make sense?).

She doesn't do it so much now but still on occasion.  I'm sure somone more knowledgeable will be along in no time with some better advice :P

I was unsure about the mantra cry too, but I soon worked out the difference between that and when he needed me.

My DS just makes a monotone 'waaah' noise. Sometimes he yells out in short bursts, and we do get the occasional squeal, but there's definitely an obvious change when he needs me. It becomes more urgent and frantic-sounding. You'll know when it happens, I'm sure.

DH isn't so good at deciphering yet though... He thinks any increase in volume is a real cry ::) but he's learning!

We call our ds mantra cry his complaining cry.  It sounds just like he is complaining.  We go in to comfort him when it gets louder and seems to be a I need you cry.  It took us quite awhile before we figured out his cry.  Just listen closely and pay attention to all his cries and you will soon learn the differance hopefully.
