Snipped tongue-tie
« on: June 20, 2008, 20:26:27 pm »
My friend had her baby on monday...he was tongue-tied and had it clipped on Wednesday. He also became jaundinced and lost a substantial amount of weight in this time before it was discovered, (making him a SLEEPY newborn).

They've tried quite a bit of the techniques descibed for keeping sleep babies awake, but are not having much success. She is still working on getting him to open his mouth wide enough, so the latch is a bit off...but he feeds for about 30 secs and bobs off...

Is there a possibility that he is still figuring nursing out in regards to being tongue-tied, and tiring himself out?

Just looking for a bit of direction...

(she nursed her DD for a year with no problems, so she is well aware of the difficulties nursing brings...) :-\

When a baby has a tongue tie operation it can take several days for them to readjust. It may sometimes take a baby up to 2 weeks to start to regain weight for example if there has previously been a problem. BUT I doubt he's tiring himself in 30 secs before bobbing off. It may be more to do with developing technique and learning how to milk the breast which he may have struggled to do previously if he had severe tongue-tie.
It might be that he's not getting a letdown started? She might want to pump for a few secs to try and get the letdown going before she brings him to the breast. Breast compressions are also super useful in her situation once he's there.
If he's super sleepy and really has lost a fair bit it can be helpful to syringe in a little ebm just before a feed (like 10-20ml) to give him a bit of an energy boost and get him thinking about milk.

Thanks Emma...I will pass on your wisdom...we were doing breast compressions last night and working on getting the latch correct...(I call it the pinch and shove LOL)....he's done better in the last 24 hours. Some of the googled posts I'd read (and my friend) had said, OH the minute it was snipped, he nursed like a champ....and that def. was NOT the case for this little guy....

So appreciate the knowledge that it could take a few days...

Thanks Again.

Fingers crossed he's sorted soon. I know people say it can be immediate but it really isn't always and some relearning has to happen. She's lucky to have a friend like you.

That's what I thought too!!!

Btw every time I see your DD's ticker I check to see how old my DD is LOL. That always reminds me, but I forget to look at my own. They're growing up so fast!

Hi

Not sure if this a little late for you but just saw the tongue tie post. My little fella had his snipped at two weeks. He was a sleepy feeder then and now switches between sleep feeding and giddy feeding (looking everywhere else and not focusing on the job).  He latched ok but previously I had got him latched on my using a pump a minute or two before each feed to get my nipple into a shape that was easier for him to manage.  I didn't need to continue this once he was snipped but it was definately a sanity saver for me to keep him taking on milk.

Don't know if that helps.

Thank you Charlotte, my friend did end up using a pump for a bit....but he seems to have sorted himself out now.

Thanks again.
