What do ya do when on holidaybobs?
« on: June 21, 2008, 19:21:11 pm »
We are off for a 5 day break on 7th july to Butlins  ;D ;D ;D ;D

What do you do routine wise, the day we go down will be screwed up lol, but I can deal with that. Do you keep to normal nap times? dd is 17 months and sleeps 12-2 with white noise and blacked out room

Obviously where we are staying we can have a fan at best. She is not great sleeping anywhere but her own cot and gets hysterical. DS is still in a cot at 3 and a bit years old, cause he shares a room with DD at home, and I know he would torment her if he could get out of bed, so on holiday he will be in a BBB! Argh! what the heck do I do for:

DD - naps how do I prepare her for a new cot and new surroundings
DS - he will be in a BED help!

I am reluctant to stick them in bed at 7pm when there is some great entertainment I KNOW DS will love in the evening (some people from britains got talent)

Shall I bin the whole routine for 5 days, all cuddle up in one double bed? hmmmmmm I predict a riot!

Ok I would pick a schedule and stick to it holidays or not. When we went to Italy with dd 2 years ago we moved to an 8 to 8 schedule which let us eat out at night together and then me and dh could watch movies or sit on the balcony reading and drinking beer, though it was world cup season so he watched more tv.
Re the big boys bed I would make a big fuss about how special it is and he should be quiet as a mouse so as not disturb his sister, worked for us when we had to go to a hotel a few weeks ago and they shared for the first time

Otherwise if you are ok with ditching the routine for a week go for it, I am too routine driven to be able to do that.    Great help am I not ?

Am very routine driven myself. Think at your kids age they could handle the routine change, the first day will mix them up so start as you mean to go on. Dh asked if we could change next weekend when we go on hols but ds is only almost a year so will not appreciate a routine change, will wake at the same time anyway so no changing routine for us this year. Next year yes. You just have to wake them up on the first day and play naps a little by ear but stick to your usual wake up time before bed, kwim?

Personally I would try and stick with the routine with regard to bedtime and mealtimes if I could.  We're going to Wales to a caravan park for a week in August and that's what we'll try and do because ds (aged 2) is settled and I don't want to throw things clean out the window.  I wouldn't be so fussed about naps but to me the bedtime routine is what keeps him on the straight and narrow.

Ds has been sleeping in a big boy bed for a while but I'm going to bring his bedrail with us and make sure he has his loveys with him (three little toy dogs that he's slept with since birth).

I was routine driven until we took DS1 to Italy - it worked really well just ditching the routine and going with the flow - we could tske him out to dinner at nights - we usually fed him earlier so he'd chew on a breadtsick or 4 whilst we were eating!
my advice - just go with the flow - it's a holiday - enjoy it!  ;D

I have tried to stick to routine the best I could on holidays because DS didn't cope well with later bed times at all , lucky for us he always napped well in his stroller so we were able to stay out during the day ,at night we knew that evenings would be spent either in the room or on balconies abroad . You know if your kids will cope with later bedtimes and how quickly they will get back into routine once the holiday is over .
As for BBB I would ask if they have bed rails , we have moved soo many rooms around on holiday to make sure Ryan is safe in bed by either pushing up against a wall and requesting more pillows to pad him in or even pushing the single right up against our double and having one huge bed . Could you not have a cot for DS if you're more comfortable with that ?

Oooooh am in a quandry now.......  I would LOVE to ditch the routine for once, and I love how it all sounded for you Sharon, but on the flip side am quivering with fear lol

Nadia, they said they cant give us another cot because he is over 2......... booooooo! Bed rails sound good though, something to ask about :) Thanks for the idea x

Will pack all the lovies linfran, since ds wont even leave the house without his lol, very frustrating lol.

Oh I so hope this wont screw things up, I have had them both on routines since 3 months old, and they have been very happy on them and did so well... but hey 5 days out cant ruin them forever surely?

Ooooh am in a quandry!

Emma I'm a lot like you routine wise but we've been on a few hols now (I wouldnt go before for fear of riot!) and honestly the only thing which works is going with the flow. Get to dinner early but at 'adult' dinner times say 6.30 - 7 then let the kids watch A BIT of shows (see you they respond to OT) and bedtime can shift to later. I was terrified of later bedtimes but T has often since gone to bed  REALLY late like 9.30 - 10 on special occasions and done really well.
Have fun!

Just wanted to add my penny for what it is worth.  We have just come back from a 14nt holiday with our 17month old who if you have read any of my previous posts you will know has been a terrible napper/sleeper.  However while away we kind of went with the flow and although not everyday she took much of a nap due to us being on the go she made up for it at night, something she never does at home and was taking 13-14 hrs at night sometimes giving us a glorious lie in till 9am some mornings (5am when at home!) .  Anyway I would just be a little more relaxed and if you notice too much OT try to fit a nap or earlier nt in where you can, but I think you will be surprised how they adapt better than we do.  Good luck and enjoy.

The last time we went on holiday was when Harry was not quite 2 and I was 20 odd weeks pg. The routine went out the window!
We had a double bed and a single bed in the room - no room for a travel cot - have you thought about a travel cot for DS?

DH ended up sleeping in the single bed and I slept in the double with Harry. He didn't go to sleep til 10 most nights and would sleep in the car during the day. (We made sure to go for lots of drives).

But you know what? Within 2 days of being at home he was back to his old routine. Go with the flow while you are away. After all, it's meant to be a HOLIDAY!  :P

That's all folks!
(Well, maybe another girl if I can convince DH!)

I am very routine driven, as Katie's sleep gets messed up for weeks if the routine gets "off". So I stick to our usual routine as much as we possibly can. Like your LO she likes her own bed, so what I have done this time (we're on hols right now!!) is put her in the travel cot for a week before we came away (in her own room) and referred to it as her little bed. And this time she has been fine in it here, first night took a while to settle and a few NW - but the second night she slept for 12hrs straight without a peep.

So for us, the key is having as much familiar as possible (we bring the white noise CD and her bedding from home) and getting her used to the travel cot beforehand, and then sticking to the usual routine as much as we can - and then she has a ball being somewhere new!

But it varies so much depending on your LO - you have to do what you think feels right for YOUR LOs

Have a great time!

We used to go to Butlins as kids a lot from when I was about 3 and sis a babe in arms....I alays have needed my sleep and was still napping at 4 so mum and dad had to take this into account when planning our days. I remember even being six or seven and mum making us have quiet time (with a nap if she was lucky) after tea (she even brought her own version of blackout blinds...a dark sleeping bag was hung over the curtain rail in the little chalet room) so as we could stay up for the fun with the bluecoats till 10pm or so....and then we'd sleep in till 8 or so for mum!!! she was a BW before her time!!!!

as for Oscar, his hols have mainly been to my parents and the main problem when he was smaller was with the hour (or sometimes two hour) difference....I've been there twice when the clocks have gone backwards or forwards during our stay so he's had to deal with two shifts in clock during one holiday.....he never sleeps as well outside his own surroundings but there are lots of adults, like me, who are the same....so we have EW with him usually....

maybe try a travel cot for DS.....
good luck and enjoy it!

am watching this intently as we are going away in august. We have been away a few times and have always tried to go with the flow but DD is a routine addict anmd we always end up doing the same as at home LOL.

We too are going away to a caravan so I am hoping that once DD is in bed for the night we can play games with DS , we also have a balcony/veranda so we are hoping for a lot of outside time in the evening with him.

My BFF went away to Tenerife recently with another friend both have LOs who are 2. They would allow them to stay up as late as they want and then walk them in their buggies until they were asleep. Then they got the rest of the evening to enjoy the entertainment and transfered them into their beds when they got back to the rooms.

You could always try that, will your LO fall asleep in thebuggy? then she can be right next to you but DS gets to enjoy the entertainment

Just go for it I would say, if she needs her bed you will soon know all about it I reckon :-*

as for the cot thing, >:( to Butlins! Do you have a travel cot to take or maybe you could borrow one?

I am also going to take DDs fan and own bedding, she is in a big girl bed at home but I may take our travel cot just in case, at least she wont get out of it! I will also take some extra towels to pin up at the window to make it darker LOL

Just remembered - the other thing I have found to be a real godsend is some portable black-out blinds - I got them from a company online called perfectly happy people. They are quite expensive but they make the room so pitchy black (even darker than at home!) they are great!
