hmmmmm how do I get the diddy off her?
« on: June 25, 2008, 11:04:10 am »
DD is nearly 18 months old  :o :o :o

She is in love with her diddy (her name for dummy ;) or nana as she likes to call it too).  I do not mind her having it for sleep, but she wants it ALL DAY LONG! I have managed successfully to get it off her for a couple hours at a time, but she walks around all sad saying "nana nana diddy".  Her speech is what is concerning me, I dont know what it should be at this age but she says "mummy" "daddy" "all gone" "all gone mummy daddy" "copter (helicopter" "grandma" "grandad" "shoe" "jack" "doggy" "kitty" "sticky" etc and they all do sound very clear. I suppose I worry about her future speech and what track she should be on at this age  ??? ???

How on earth do I get it off her without the crying/sad faced look etc

I know I have created this.... but I want to fix it now  :) :) :) :)

Anyone been here? x

Speech seems fine to me. :) Mine did not have that many words in her age.
But well I suspect all day with dummy is not good.
I guess completely without crying if she is too attached is not possible, but maybe is.  Lots of distraction.
Ill move it to toddler board for you.

Hi, I think speech sounds good at that age.

I took the dummy off Rory when she was the same age.  I didn't mind her having a dummy for sleep, as you say too, but then she started wanting it whenever something upset her, and she'd try and climb the shelf to get to them rather than calm herself, or come to us for cuddles and comfort.

I thought it would be devastating for her, but it went well. After about 4 days she stopped asking for it.

I kept it really simple, just said 'no dummy, all gone, but mummy daddy and puppy are here'.  She cried briefly and was sh!tty with me and refused songs but she didn't wake once (god knows how that happened!!).  I just kept repeating that she has mummy, daddy and puppy.  Fortunately she loves her soft puppy dog so she had a good comfort with her.

I got my DH to take the dummies out to the garage and put them on a shelf I couldn't reach so I wouldn't cave that night!   :P

Thank you both :) I am deffo keeping it for sleep, she is very spirited and a little touchy so if she wants it in bed thats cool by me :)  I have done distracting her in the day today, and also that if she wants cuddles to come to mummy, she seemed not TOO bad, until she started to get shattered from our 2hr park trip and I did give it to her then. Was nice to see her smile properly without it in her face lol!

Thank you!!! xxx Will let u know how tomorrow goes :)

Hi Emma, you may not find it so bad as at this age they understand quite a lot so really get that it is only for sleep. Leorah knows they are only for nap and bedtime but she will do anything she can to get one and then will try and suck sneakily on it  ::) I have made a bit of a concession and if she is in her room on her own playing and she has found one I let her keep it but as soon as she comes out it goes back, I also sometimes let her have some cuddling up time with me reading books and let her have it but only on days she is particularly tired/ill/teething. Her speech sounds great, Leorah's words aren't very clear. I did laugh that she calls it her diddy as Leorah has started calling DH Diddy, we call her dummies dum-dums   :D

Ds is also obsessed with his 'suckies', and was a similar age when he started wanting them in the daytime. I told him that his suckies get really tired looking after him at night, and they need to sleep in the daytime. So, every morning we had this elaborate session of tucking in his suckies for their sleep in his bed, and we'd do the same after the nap. He even tiptoes around his bedroom so he doesn't wake them up ;D

Might work for you?
Caroline :)

LOL caroline I'm LOVING that story. we had the same prob with T and then the doc said we needed to get rid of it as his speech was suffering, but it sound as tho abbi is doing fine ( T was just over 2) and emily is now the same...she wants it all the time... I replace it with a bit of bread or a cracker. With T after a week of being firm he accepted it was just for sleep.

we do what stacy suggested for Lilly's lovey.  We have it only for sleep, so mixie has to go nigh nighs after Lilly's sleep so he can be all rested to look after her when she sleeps again. She puts it in a high draw and we wave bye bye.  Seems to work well.

That is so cute :o)

I am loving the different names! Leorah also has to put her dum-dum back in the cot before we leave the roo m in the morning and says bye bye. I then have to remember to go and fish the all (10!) out and put them up high so she can't help herself all day! I think it elps that she has a lovey (Tinky Winky) that is never far from her during the day.
