What's going on with our naps? OT or UT?
« on: June 27, 2008, 10:59:35 am »
Ok so we have EW for 6 months now, but our naps were fine.
9.30 ish for 1 hour I woke him
2.00 pm for 1.5 hours usually woke him
7.30 Bedtime.
EW were usually around 6.

Yesterday he only did a 20 min nap in the am so I put him down at 1.30, he woke briefly at 2.15 and then woke at 3.00 pm
Bed as usual 7.30

Today, woke 6.10 but I think went back to sleep until 6.40
9.30 Nap, slept at 9.40, again 20 mins
1.35 very irritable, put him down and he whinged and chatted on and off and could hear him moving round his cot.
2.00 pm seems to have finally fallen asleep.

3.00 pm woke chatting and laughing, left him 20 mins and he was not going back to sleep.
That makes 1 hour 20 mins sleep today  :-[

We are going on hols tomorrow and I have a feeling we are heading into a nightmare. Is he moving to 1 nap? My suspicion is yes. But if he does 20 mins around 9.40 what time should I put him down then in the afternoon? DDs transition was so easy compared to this.

EEK!  Well... I thought I'd just put a few thoughts out there.  When DS went to 1 nap, naps had gone wacky.  So yes, he could be transitioning.  Maybe check out info on the site for the 2-1 nap switch?  Also, DD sleeps 20-30 min when OT.  Is that possible?  I wondered if that is what happened at 1:30.  OT so difficulty falling asleep?   :-\  Wish I could help more.  Hopefully an expert will check out your thread and give you more insight.

Fiona - I sometimes have this but otherway round (1 hr then 20 mins)  as long as he isn't OT at bedtime he is usually OK.

I would maybe stick with it, but try doing about 3/3.5 a time after see what kind of nap that brings - I guess it will be hard with your trip but some early beds may help if pm nap is short as well.

Not much help.  I think in naps faq there is a thing about sleeping 20 mins and what it means - could be OT.

Have a great trip - hope you enjoy K's b'day - maybe his pressie to you will be eating and sleeping LOL!!

Ha Ha Emma I sure hope that's my pressie, though he ate for me tonight :-). The 20 min thing is bugging me. DD did this when she was transtioning but she would take half an hour to get to sleep then sleep for 20. He falls asleep after 10 and sleeps for 20. I cant imagine he could be over tired after 3 hours wake time at this stage, we have been on 3 hours for months now.  His A time after both the short am naps was 3.5 hours. He seems to be ok at bedtime, though it's now taking him 20 mins of chat to fall asleep whereas before he slept pretty much straight away.  I am very afraid of early bed time as ds usually only does 10 hours at night with the very occasional 10.5 or 11 hours thrown in, I can actually count them on one hand.

I'm with you - I do not do early beds - I would rather push him for an hour in the stroller to get a 10 min nap than have him in bed before 7 - it just starts a cycle of EW in my book.

Ummm - you don't want to push the am nap back do you?  I wonder if he needs more a time?  that would explain the chatting at night too.

Hmm no not really, if I push the am nap then I push the pm nap and dd goes to bed at 7.30 so ds has to go as well. I need him not to nap later than 3.30 pm at the moment.  I know, not being fussy am I. But a short am nap and long pm nap suits our lifestyle here too as shops open late in the am and it's too hot during the middle of the day to go out so we get our outdoor exercise in the late pm even though it's still hot.
He has between 4 and 4.5 hours A time before bedtime so he really should be tired enough to sleep pretty much straight away.
Next few days will be chaos in any case. Hope he sleeps until 7 tomorrow but that would be a first. I hate to think of overtiredness setting in as he has had 2 bad days of naps now and we are travelling all day tomorrow and he wont get to bed before 11 pm our time tomorrow night after being up by latest 7 am.

You've been on fixed nap times haven't you?  Maybe its not the a time thats wrong its just he needs to adjust to the new pm sleep time - if he managed 2 hours (normally you wake him yes?) that would take you to 3.30 - perfect!!

Right now we just have to get him to understand thats the plan!!!

I would stick with the 3.5 for a few days after the travelling and see if his nap extends - if not you may have to start pushing the pm back slightly.

Fingers crossed he sleeps til 7 for you and the travelling isn't too upsetting for him!

I am not following you i promise  :P
Sounds like the 2-1switch to me. I would go for a short nap morning then shoot for a long afternoon nap 3hrs after wake up from morning nap.

What's OT and UT again?   :P   ;D  It's times like this that I wish they can talk so they will tell us the real reason for this nap silliness.

How's the flight, Fiona?

Hi Ladies,
Well we are on our 3 day of 1 nap, that was a very quick transition. Seems to be going well so far so big huge anti jinx vibes. He sleeps about 2 hours or 2.15 hours. I think he is doing well with the very long wake time (5 hrs 45 mins this am) because he is so distracted at the moment.

The flight was looooong, never again. Well actually they both did very well but K only slept for 1 hour in dhs arms and had a 20 min nap in his buggy and that was over about17 hours! I am dreading the flight going back.

Hello!

Happy birthday to K - Did you have a nice day?  Anti jinx vibes sent - I'm going to 5 hours a time tomorrow - as long as I get a normal wake up - 3.30am yesterday (Must of known it was his birthday LOL) and 5.30 today.

Have you tried piriton or mediseed on K?  My doctor recommended I get some for our flight to NZ.

Hope you are having a great time and enjoying spending time with your family.
