Breastfeeding and Deep Heat?
« on: June 28, 2008, 12:43:10 pm »
I used some Deep Heat Spray about 20mins ago as I have awful
back pain.  Well my body seems to be on fire!  I sprayed it as
directed only on the small of my back (where pain is) but have come
out in a burning hot rash on my arms and on my left side!  Seriously
feels burning hot to touch.  Now I am terrified to breast feed.

Here's a pic of my arm to show I'm not just a drama queen!
Will my supply be ok?

Oh no. You poor thing.
Deep heat as a product is safe for breastfeeding as I'm sure you know (Hale advises not using too regularly). You have obviously had some kind of allergic reaction to an ingredient and your body has produced histamines.
The ingredients you have reacted to are absorbed very poorly into the body and will not cause any harm to your milk. So your baby will not have a problem directly from the deep heat.
Your allergic reaction will not affect him either.
The only problem might be if you were to take an antihistamine product to control your reaction as there is some link between antihistamines and breastmilk supply reduction. However even here this tends to be after using it several times.
I'm sure you will be fine. If you at all worried you could phone NHS direct. But this is a topical reaction and it's not related to your breastmilk or breastfeeding. If you start to feel unwell in other ways then that might be more serious. Hope it goes soon.
