18 month--please help with naps & routine
« on: July 05, 2008, 23:59:08 pm »
My 18 month old has the current routine:
wake up 6-6:30
Nap 12.30
Bedtime 7

I just changed to the above routine because she was clearly OT--clingy, and also resisting sleep.  This is working better.
For 3 days, she took 2 hour naps...but then she had a cold..and took 1/2 nap, 1 hour nap yesterday & today. She wakes up during the nap and tosses and turns.  Maybe it is the cold that waking her up.....but no problems sleeping at night...no NW?
If I put her down before 12:30 then BT would be super early and
EW would occur.  Is a 12.30 nap too late for her 6 wake up time?

Thank you again!!

Hi Siria!!!

I find 12.30 too late for Lil and she wakes at 6, bed around 7pm.  I find I get a shorter nap - If she goes down at 11.45 I get the best nap....but that's just us.  I would try to put your lo down at 12 for a few days and see how it goes.  depends on the level of activity though too.

hth!

Hi Siria, I would also try 12pm nap. Jasmine was up around 6am and she takes her nap at 12pm. If she wakes earlier, then I put her down around 11.45pm. If she's dead set cranky, then I put her down at 11.30pm.

I just also want to add Leorah wakes early if her morning A time is too long, it's crazy but when I put her down earlier she naps longer and then wakes later the next day!!

thanks for all your responses!  I have put her earlier and she sleeps longer for naps!  Now how do you all go about bedtime?  If she sleep 1-2 hours, when do you put your lo down for bedtime?
Thanks again!!!

Leorah goes to bed after 4½-5 hours depending on how tired she is but she has short A times for her age. I'm glad you are getting longer naps  :)

Skatty, thank for your response!  I put her down at 12 today and she is still sleeping.  I was putting her down way too late at night and her naps were cut short too.   Do you mind posting her schedule just to have an idea?  Thank you!! and many hugs!

That's great  :D I am not sure how useful this will be for you as Leorah's A times have been very short for the last month, those damn molars are threatening to break through  ::) I also watch for her cues, see how tired she is and how much activity she's had but at the mo' she is doing something like this:

7.30/8.00 am wake
11.45/12.15 nap
13.30/1400 awake
17.45/18.00 bed

Yes I know it's crazy that she is having such short A times for a 21 month old but she sleeps a long night so works ok, never been a long napper. Before this period of short A times she was doing something more like this:

07.30 awake
12/12.15 nap
13.15/13.30 awake
18.00/18.30 bed

If I miss her window she can take over an hour to fall asleep but I leave her because she needs that nap and will eventually pass out!! I always know she's OT because she has this evil/twisted laugh she does and then I could kick myself for pushing her! How much A time did your LO have today? Perhaps use that as your before nap guide and then do the same when you find a good A time so she settles quickly at night. Let us know how it goes.

Hugs, Katt  :)

Thanks for posting your lo schedule!  I appreciate your help.
Today went like this:
6:15 Awake
12-2  Nap
7:15 Bedtime!
So she went 5:45 min awake and took good nap!!!!
For so many days short naps and struggle for BT due to long awake time in afternoon - 6 hours!
Anyways, thanks for helping and I hope your lo molars go through quickly!  Are they the 2nd set of molars???  Hugs, siria

Hi Siria and Aly, we are having a molar nightmare  :( We all had a lie in and didn't wake until 8.15m this morning and by 11.15 Leorah was a ratty mess so we put her down for her nap or at least some chill out time at 11.40 and it was too late and she didn't fall asleep until 1.10pm after much OT squaling and her special OT evil laugh :o How can her A times be so short, she is not really eating either and seems to be in so much pain but no teeth yet  :P

Siria I hope you have found your magic A time  ;)

ALY & Kattxx:

Kattxx: Oh Kattxx, I feel for you!  Molars are horrible!!!!
Does Motrin or Tylenol help her at all???  That is the only way Marianna would make it through the night.  And yes, I remember her not eating too.  It is sooo tough.  I really hope you all have better night.  With Marianna took 1 month for all four molars to come in but she does not have her 2 nd set of molars yet.
How long did she nap when you put her down?
Many Hugs, Siria

ALY:

Actually today went like this:
6 wake up
11.50-1:10 nap???  (Napped for 1 and 20 min)
Put her down at 6.30

Afraid that she will have EW!!  ALY & KATTXX: What do you do when lo naps only one hour instead of two?  Do you put her down early like I did ????  Or do you put her at the same time- 7???
Thank you so much!

Hi Siria - that is exactly what Lilly's day was like yesterday.  A one hour nap, but she is sick, so understandable.  I always put to bed half hour earlier - she will make up for it in her night sleep normally, as long as it's only a one off. I have a set bedtime for Lilly, but I do watch her cues at night and respond accordingly.

HOpe those molars are better Katt  xx

Thanks Aly!  I was taking note of Marianna's sleep pattern and it seems that some days she alternates between 2 hour and 1 hour naps.
She is getting her eye teeth...would that disrupt her sleep.  Interestingly, she does not wake up at night at all.    She is not especially cranky.
But when she takes a 2 hour nap she usually wakes up at 1.15 min mark and calls me half asleep and then goes back to sleep.  But when it is 1.15 min she seems unable to put herself back to sleep.
Could be the teeth bothering, right????
Does Lily take mostly 2 hour naps?  Did she alternate between 1 and 2 hours for a while?
When I put her down for a nap, the Awake time is the same if not earlier and she still takes an hour nap at times.
Today I had to put her down early again and she went to sleep w/o a problem: 6.30, woke up at 1 from nap.  The night before she did make up the lost nap though like Lily does.
Any ideas??? Thank you.

Kattxx:  how is your lo doing with her molars?
