{hugs} Katie, this doesn't sound fun.  On a serious note, if you're going to the Cotswolds for 2 weeks and you want some company then we'll be there!  DH's company pay for all his petrol and it'd be nice to get away from the stresses of trying to sell our house for a day!  No pressure if you've lots planned but let me know if you fancy it :D

Neither of my boys have taken more than one long nap a day (at least after the early weeks).  I spent alot of time trying to get Zander to take 2 long naps before I accepted that one would always be 45 minutes and no time at all accepting that Nate would be the same too!

At 5 months Nate would have a 45 minute nap after no longer than 2 hours A time and another long nap after no longer than 2.25 hours A time.  So let's say he woke at 7, naps would be 9-9.45 then 12-2ish with a catnap (always on the run, only ever in the car at the end but in the pushchair or sling when he'd do that and I think doing that for the catnap made him more portable!) around 4.30/5.  By catnap I mean just that, literally 10-20 minutes!  Zander would never take a catnap though, so I know what you mean about that!  In your situation I think I'd take the girls out for a long walk at that time if I could, so Norah's at least getting some rest and fresh air even if she isn't getting a nap.  As for feeds, Nate was feeding at 7, 11, top-up just before long nap, 2.30 (or whenever he woke up) and 6.30.  I'd recommend the feed before the long (hopefully!) nap as a full tummy might help Norah to sleep longer.

Have you considered that Norah doesn't really need a wind-down and that it's just frustrating her?  I only say this because Nate has never had one lol!  He does, though, have sleep cues, things which tell him he's going to sleep.  The major one is putting him in his sleeping bag.  As well as that he has some sleepy classical music playing at sleep times (I know you have those!!) and a Fisher Price Aquarium which plays wave sounds (which he now operates himself if he ever wakes up!).

As for the blackouts, we have some travel blackout blinds.  They're not perfect but pretty good and we used them in our bedroom when Nate was tiny.  Here they are; http://www.baabaablinds.com/.  I'd be happy to sell you mine if you're interested as we don't need them anymore.

I'm afraid I'm a little less well equiped for ideas on how to actually get her to sleep as I've pretty much always left Nate to it.  Could you try that?  Put some nice music and/or white noise on and make it as dark as you can, put her in her sleeping bag, give her a little top-up feed if it's her lunchtime nap, tell her it's time to go to sleep and put her in her cot and go.  I remember Nate always started crying at this point but he'd stopped by the time I'd walked out of the room or very soon after.  If she's not crying, just fussing etc. then leave her to it - even turn the monitor off until she's hopefully asleep.  If she's crying you'll hear her but you won't be clenching your bum cheeks listening to every little sound (or is that just me?!).

I hope today is a good day for you sweetie.

Oh you're all gems  :-*

Paula - one low pollen count dance coming up (though I'm so doped up on cortisone I don't notice it at the moment)

Claire - I know that lovey look! We used to do it to Lisi on purpose (bad mummy - I know!) and she still sleeps with the thing over her face.

The blinds look great, though we'd need 4 just for our bedroom  ::) old house with 2 teeny tiny windows and a huge sky light. I think we just need to get her to learn without as hard as it may be. I manage to get the room dimmed if not dark even on the sunniest days and then with the blanket clothes pegged to the crib rails she may be hot, but can't see and awful lot.

Kelly - you're on! I'll pm you  ;D thanks for all your tips, you're always so well thought out and thorough with your boys it puts me to shame! If I'm ever to get a catnap out of Norah it is in the sling, though more often than not these days she just sits there sucking away on it with this dazed look on her face.

Have I concidered that Norah doesn't need a wind down? She doesn't get one as I can't find a way of doing it without making her cry LOL! Just a series of sleep cues like you - into the bedroom, into the gro bag, into the bed with a wee song, blanket over and bye bye. I then leave her to it until she's really crying that "get in here now mummy" cry, but it's a tightrope walk between leaving her and her getting so OT and hysterical that she's no longer capable of calming down or stopping the flapping. I've had her waking up after a nap STILL whimpering it's got so bad!

I know exactly what you mean about the bum cheek clenching!

Thanks again y'all (as Beth and Shelby would say  ;))

Just a thought, what do you think she'd make on one of those mobiles which projects a little show onto the ceiling for 10 minutes?  Obviously you wouldn't be able to use the blanket over the cot and I don't know if her room would be dark enough for her to see it but do you think it would distract her or annoy her?!  Maybe if it was turned on before she got to the fighting sleep stage?

Love the pic Claire.  Both my lo's sleep with a blanket, and both of them fall alseep with it on their face.  It is amazing what comforts them.  DS is nearly 3 and still sleeps with his.

Do you use anything for white noise?  The aquarium thingies are great.  DS had one in his cot, and would stare at it for ages, very calming, may be worth a try.

We don't do wind down either apart from bedtime where it is brush teeth story then bed that goes for both of mine.
I think a 45min nap in the morning then a long nap at lunch time when Lisi is napping and a catnap on the run or in sling is fine until you drop the cat nap (both mine dropped it at 5.5months) is fine.
As for black out perhaps can you get a big thick black sheet and hand it over the cot at home and then over the portable cot when you are away rather than use black our blinds you could also use this for the stroller if you want her to sleep their.

I just thought I'd give you all a wee update:

Norah's learnt how to fall asleep by herself  :o ;D not always but were 150% further on from where we were. I've got black felt over the windows, bought one of those thingies that play noises while projecting pics onto the ceiling (thanks Kelly!) and for the last 3 days I've been able to put her down for her morning nap by walking and singing twinkle twinkle, stick her in bed, give her her lovey and just leave - I'm amazed and so relieved!

Lunchtime is long - either by herself or with some easy extending (yep, I know I shouldn't lie down with her but it works, and I'm tired  ;)) here I usually need to do a bit of sing - stroke, our version of shh-pat but she's zoned out in around 5 minutes.

The catnap is in the sling. A sweaty business at the moment, but if it means she sleeps I don't care!

Evenings are a bit loud still, here she almost always needs some extra help but it rarely takes longer than 15 minutes of pu/pd singing, stroking her hair and then she's out. So much better than the hour long ear drum splitting pain we had before.

A HUGE THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR HELP!  :-* :-* :-*

now let's hope I haven't jinxed things!
