Thanks Caroline for those suggestions.  I remember when Zach was on rice milk, I added I believe it was fish oil to his milk and it stunk SO bad.

I know there are other kinds you can get though.

Melanie:

Remember it has to be a complete protein for your body to get all the essential amino acids needed.  A complete protein is a whole grain + a legume.  So rice milk plus the peas in the same 24 hours would count as a complete protein.

Also any meat by itself is a complete protein.

I posted a few links on the very first post about complete proteins.

OH... YEAH.. About sleeping through the night.  That is SO AWESOME.

I found this website, and this section in particular, that lists all the different kinds of Rice Milk, what countries you can buy them from, and if they are gluten free or not as well.

my toddler was not allergic to gluten but had a lot of trouble gaining weight. (and when they eat less they get less nutrition so this is hard). my suggestions for increasing fat in the diet: i gave him a tablespoon daily of flax oil (omega 3s are great for health); organic sesame spread (tastes like peanut butter and is full of healthy fat); homemade houmas with olive oil, lots of extra virgin olive oil on everything; lots of avocadoes; full fat organic yogurt (For those who aren't dariy allergic) with oil. and lots of organic eggs. studies show that babies can eat at least 5 eggs a week without any influence on their cholestorl levels. many drs say an egg a day is ok and the yellow has great healthy fats, especially in freerange organic eggs. almond butter and almond milk is very expensive but lovely fats and really yummy. lastly, i make homemade pancakes with buckwheat (which is gluten free), ground walnuts (great high protein and fat and omega 3), bananas, blackstrap molasses (high mineral content) and cook them in butter. yum!

I haven't been on babywhisperer in a long time.  My son turned 2 in June.  He is allergic to milk, soy and fish.  Started reacting to my breast milk at about 6 weeks and we had to put him on Alemintum (not sure I'm spelling it right).  He is mostly on rice milk now.  Before he turned two though we use Hemp Milk A LOT for him.  Granted he doesn't have any gluten intolerance - so I don't know if it has gluten in it.  Hemp Milk is extremely healthy (and pricey) - we transitioned him giving him part rice and part hemp and started out with vanilla flavored.  Now he will drink it plain and LOVES it.

Just a thought in case you haven't tried that.  You can buy it at whole foods or another organic type grocery store (I actually found it at Kroger once - in their organic section)

Sorry - I forgot.  Was someone in this thread asking about bread?  I make all mine - with a bread machine.  I've got some really yummy recipes if you want them.

I was, at one time, asking about bread, but my son cannot have wheat, oats, barley, dairy, soy, egg whites, so I'm not sure if you have any recipes that fit that?

We tried hemp milk here also.  It actually cost the same as the rice milk did, which I was suprised.

I don't have a bread recipe with all those resrictions.  Sorry :(  that is though.  I have some gluten free recipes but they would have you add dry milk or eggs.  You could do some sort of egg replacer or something to replace the dry milk instead.

I just found this wonderful thread.
My lo has intolerance to lactose so I just stopped BF and had to introduce to an alternative.
I didn't want to give soy milk so i found other organic brands.
Have you heard about Oat or almond milk???
Can I have some advice?

the nutritional info for Oat milk: 250 mls
energy: 675
protein: 8
fat: 7
saturated (g): 1.25
transfat: nil
polyun: 1.75
momoun: 4
carbo total: 15.5
sugar: 9
sodium: 80 (mg)
calcium: (mg): 7.5
gluten (mg) 25

what shall I do and how much to increase to have the same nutrients, fats and protein as human or cow's milk?

Well the fat and protein look good, they are the same as in whole cows milk.  But does it have any Vitamin D in it?  Cows milk and Rice milk are fortified with vitamin D.  I'm guessing you could find a brand of oat milk that is also fortified.  Everything else looks good though.  If it doesn have vitamin D you can get vitamin D drops to add to the milk, or even poly-vitamin drops.  I don't know much about almond milk.  I just chose rice milk for my son because he has other food allergies, cannot have oats, and too afraid to try any nuts at this time.

Is your son still only 9 months?  He might be a little young still to be put on "regular" milk as far as nutrition goes.  My doctor said I could do it at 10 months as long as he is eat lots of real food to compensate.  Does your son eat lots of regular foods?

He has intolerance to lactose so the only alternative was soy, rice or oats.
he is 9 months old and has been on solids since 5 months.
He eats a lot of real food. 3 meals a day having seconds.
we have tried formula, cow's milk and it caused lots of discomfort and pain plus many night wakings

Hi, Where are you at?

Personally I would NOT do Oat Milk, just because the ingredients read 25mg of gluten and he may not be able to tolerate gluten.

Almond milk is a good alternative, but then you have to worry about being allergic to nuts or not.

At this age of only 9 months old, I think you would be wise to either do a hypoallergenic formula or soy formula.  If you think it is just the lactose he cannot have, then there is also lactose free formula.

He may actually be intolerant to the milk protein though and not the lactose.  Symptoms can be the same.  About 1/2 of kids that cannot have milk, also cannot handle soy protein either.

I would just highly advise you stick with an infant formula of some sort OR if you still have milk, you could avoid all dairy yourself.
