Wonky naps and EWs - almost 5 mths
« on: July 15, 2008, 11:53:22 am »
Hi,

HELP !!
We move house next week and DD has starting with the 45 min.naps (not consistently) even after 2hrs 20 A time. That is a long time for her age I thought. She's also rolling back to front and waking talking talking and more talking !!! She's incredibly alert and is v.active. She's been awake for 10 mins. now afte r a 50 min. 1st nap and is now fussing !

She has also started waking at 5.30am regardless of bedtime. I'd love to post a routine but it varies every day (not the A times, just the sleep times !!) We start with her awake time and so it differes daily. I'd love to get to a 7-7 routine, but like her brother she seems to have an early cycle.

I'm wondering if the rolling thing is upsetting her and keeping her awake 'cos she's a tummy sleeper. She's in a grobag and the transition from swaddle was fine. I guess we're stuck with the wakings there until she can also roll back onto her tummy ?

It's the 45 min. nap monster I hate as we go back to a min. 4/5 naps a day w/ that and messy feed times (she does 4hr feeds normally). I've tried w2s but she isn't responding well. Once I got her back to sleep when I went in and patted her botty briefly. She (again like her brother) needs her space ot settle herself so less is more.

Any tips on moving on the EWs and encouragement for the end of 45 min. naps ? Is 2hrs 20 long for a 5 mth old ? Aren't they supposed to disappear by 6 mths ???? She won't re-settle in the am if we do a feed at 5.30am, least only 1 in 10 attempts she might, just might. She's a feisty one !

HUGS!  we just moved house a month ago and it threw off DD...sleep was a bit wonky just from that for a week!  hope it goes smoothly for you!

here are 2 links for you

i'd say 2 hours 20 min is on the upper limit of normal for 5 mo...but if she has a short nap her following A time should be much much shorter than this, maybe only 1.5 hours to 1 hour 45 min.  sounds like you are fitting in more naps in a day to compensate for the short naps which is what you have to do, but also shorten up the A times after you get a short nap.  45 min naps mean either OT or UT, so you don't always have to increase A time with a 45 min nap, sometimes you have to reduce it.

Thx for the support.

It's the inconsistency whic irks me the most. Today she did 2 great naps (catnap another story) at the 2 hr mark and today no go past 40 mins. for nap 1. BTW, I've heard of 40 mins. meaning O/T or U/T but not 45 !! Last yr. we had a def. 35 = O/T, 40 is either and 45 is U/T drummed into us. What would you say is def. U/T then ???

Off we go again. How I hate the 45 min. nap monster !

OK, so apart from the 45 min. nap monster hanging out in our house we also have a LO who is rolling from tummy to back (she's a tummy sleeper), ending up against the bumper and staying awake talking till she gets fed up and then I go in. I can't remember the last time she slept on her back and suspect she associates it with diaper changes and playtime.

Any tips to help her move on, i.e. what to do whilst she can't roll onto her front or sleep on her back ? She's so alert she won't re-settle when I go in even when she's fed up/had enough.

I've had 3 short naps today and in the run-up to closing on our house deal my nerves are wracked....................Yesterday with longer naps she didn't do the rolling thing but I know she has to figure it out mostly on her own..

hugs, i don't know we never had that issue.  i've heard some mums put rolled up towels to keep them in one spot for sleep?   :-\  practice rolling the other way during the day and hope it passes!  there's not much you can do about the developmental stuff.

Hello!!!

We have a nearly % month old too and she likes to sleep on her backbut...has recently hit the milestone of being able to roll onto her tummy......which now keeps her awake at nap time and bed time because he can't roll back over. Our LO is very active and so so alert its crazy.....So i decided to buy a "Safe t sleeper" available on amazon.com. It allows you to secure them in be it on their back tummy or side. Hence preventing them from all this rolling..
Good Luck! ;)

Hi Dippy !

We have a wedge but used that when she was swaddled. TBH, I'd prefer she rolled and got used to it on her own (having been there before.........!) but just wanted some thoughts.

She's had one 2hr nap today so I'm hoping we can end on a brighter note !! NEVER speak too soon in this game !
