can a 6m old go in the ocean?
« on: July 18, 2008, 14:42:00 pm »
hi

I am planning to go with my Lo in a couple of months to Australia.
She will be around 6 months then and i was wondering if it is OK to enter the ocean with her. Also, what kind of equipment would i need for her to get in the water ( swimming pool or ocean)

thanks
Angela

Hi there, I think it would be fine to take her in the ocean.  We took swimming lessons with DS a couple weeks ago and I just carried him in the water.  There are also little floaties they can sit in which could be nice because you have your hands more free

You could always just sit her in the surf with you right behind her so she can splash when it goes in and out :)

Have a great vacation! :)

Just a quick addition...you might want to bring a small pair of sunglasses for your daughter.  I took E to the beach for the first time last week, and he screamed his head off until I popped some sunglasses on him.  Seems the glare of the sun off the sand hurt his eyes, poor bub!

I was going to suggest a floatie too . Have a great time .

p.s I can't remember the reasons too well but it's not advised to use sunglasses on LO's . Will ask the member that was advised by her optician not to use them .

Ryan's Mum, if you can remember why not to use sunglasses on LO's, please let me know.  We visit E's aunt in Florida quite often, and I would like to be able to go to the beach while we're there!  In the meantime, I'll ask the ped. at his well baby check next week.

hello Ladies,

I am from Belgium and will ask my doctor tomorrow about sunglasses. But i am always looking for a second opinion. What are the Doctors in your countries say about babies and Sunglasses? From what age can a baby wear sunglases ( is there a minimum age?)

cheers

I think it has to be the right ones. There is a danger that the sunglasses (like cheap ones) don't have the proper protection and DS would glare in the sun and damage his eyes.

I'd also ask a good optician, they'll know which ones.

have a great time  :-*

Just wanted to let you all know that our doctor said that sunglasses were a good idea for the beach (and for snow, for those of you who live in snowy climates).  She said that the glare off sand and snow can cause damage to LO's eyes that might not show an effect now, but could predispose him for cataracts and other problems later in life.  She said that, if he'll wear them, he should have them on.  She didn't have any opinions on brands or anything like that; if I can find something with UVA protection, to use those.  The teeny pair he received as a gift were from The Gap and had a UVA sticker on them, so we'll use those.  Interested to hear if anyone else received different information, though.

I just heard that you have to watch that there is a UVA sticker, otherwise, they are fine.

Hope you enjoy your trip!
