Are you expressing and bottle feeding? They need a minimum of 20oz of formula with solids (milk in foods like cheese yoghurt etc counts towards this total) from around 8 months so I would assume the same is true for breastmilk. I think around 4 breastfeeds a day is usual at this age but maybe check over on the breastfeeding boards - more experience with formula over here!

Hi.
8 month old (has never slept through) Lo finally dropped night feeds but still woke a couple of times, this was getting better.. she cant settle herself to sleep, rubbing or patting of the back normally helps. However, this did not last.. poor little mite was poorly again, starting with conjunctivitis followed by gastroenteritis and now teething again. She has no luck!!
My problem is she is now feeding through the night again, is she she making up for when she was poorly?

EASY

Wakes 6am

E- 6am - 8 (7oz)
A-
S- 8.30 - 10.30

E- 12 ( 6-7 oz plus solids)
A
S- 3 - 4.30/5

E - 5.30 (Solids)
A
Bath time 6-6.30 (depending on mood)
S- settle, bottle bed - normaly by 7pm

Dream feed --- she wakes before hand. Sometimes 9.30pm sometimes 10 ish or sometime 11.30 so i dont do dream feed

if she feeds at 10 she goes back down untill around 2ish if im lucky.. (last night it was 1.30) when she wakes she takes a full bottle (7oz). she can then wake again for more later!
I have tried to do the diluted feeds but this just made her wake an hour later for more.
I am hoping that this will settle itself, not sure what to do, should i make the 10 feed diluted and keep night feed full then ween night feed once 10pm feed has gone

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

 Hey hun,

When my LO was 8 months he was still on 4 x bottles a day. One on the morning and evening then 2 more in the day fitted around naps and solids etc which can quite tricky! Bottles usually looked a bit like so....

 6am - bottle
 7am - solids
 9am - nap
 11am -bottle
 12 - solids
 2pm Bottle then nap
 4pm - solids
 6pm bottle and bed

This might help with the night wakings if you can get more calories in during the day. If she is poorly she may well be looking for more milk in the night too but I would be tempted to give water only as fluid intake is more important if they are not feeling too clever.

Tracey recommends dropping the DF at about 7/8 months once solids are well established. Here is a link to tell you how to go about that. I would personally keep it up if she is poorly then start to wean it when she feels better.

Hello.  DD is now 6mo.  She is eating like crazy for the last 2 weeks.  She does sleep through the night, but during the day she is eating about 45 oz. and we feed her solids twice a day.  Is this normal?  She's been hungry every 2 hours.

It could be a growth spurt although 2 weeks is a long time for one. 45oz  does sound like a lot of milk in 24 hours, the "normal" is around 30/36oz at the start of solids then it does drop a bit for most babies  - but there are always exceptions. How much solids is she eating and how long has she been on solids? What is her weight like?

she has only been on solids for about 2 weeks also.  She was sick about 3 weeks ago and not eating much at all, so I just thought she was making up for lost time, but she's not stopping.  She weighs 15 lbs, 5 oz.  So not heavy by any means, pretty much average.

She could be making up for lost time plus a growth spurt maybe! Have you discussed it with your health care provider? I'm sure they would probably suggest increasing solids. It doesn't sound like solids are taking over from milk yet :P.  The other trick I've read before somewhere is to go back to a medium/slower flow teat to slow them down a bit so they don't take quite so much because they have a chance to realise they are getting full :-\. Not sure how you would feel about that.

actually we were at the doctor today for her 6 mo. checkup and they didn't seem concerned at all.  I think I'll just go on for another week and see what happens.

she did gain 1 lb. 5 oz. in a two and a half week period.  Seems like a lot to me, but maybe not.

OK, I'm back.  I keep thinking this is a growth spurt, but it keeps getting worse.  She does take a break from this for a day or two every week, but then is right back at it.

She is still on two solid meals a day, and now for about three days she's been eating 50+ oz. in a 24 hour period.  She's back to eating every 2 hours and getting up once during the night.

What's the deal?

Can teething cause them to eat more instead of less?

She doesn't have any reflux symptoms does she? Have you thought about trying a hungry baby milk? I think that is a bit of an exessive amount of formula at the moment - what do you do to try and hold her off until feed time?

Teething puts them off feeds rather than more because it hurts to suck - doesn't really effect my DD's appetite mind ::).

Maybe I'll try the hungry baby formula as soon as this one is gone.  Thanks.

I think its excessive too.  I may call the Dr. if she keeps it up, but as of her last check up she was 25-50% for weight, so not like she's real big or anything.  (Wish I had that metabolism!!)

To hold her off I just try to distract her in any way I can, but if I even walk anywhere near where we keep the bottles she freaks out!!

Ya teething didn't affect my DS either, just didn't know if it could have the opposite effect for any reason.

Oh, just saw you question about reflux.  I'm not sure actually.  DS had reflux and it was soooo obvious.  However, DD does arch her back a little bit into the feed.  Never thought much about it as she almost NEVER spits up, and I can't think of any other symptoms at the moment.....maybe though.
