Symptoms of Milk Intolerance in older kids
« on: July 28, 2008, 01:39:55 am »
I was just wondering if anyone has experience with thier older kids showing increasing signs of dairy intolerance?  My Andrew is 5 1/2 and I am starting to think that his chronic constipation is realated to milk and dairy.  I am slowly weaning him off of it to see what happens (He LOVES milk!!!)  He has had lots of diarrhea mixed with constipation and gas and bloating.  He takes miralax just about everyday because of it.  Any experiences would be great so I know if I just have MSPI on the brain!!!!  I am going to also try a probiotic with him to see if that helps any as well.

Deft. sounds like he has a problem with milk to me.  Constipation can be the only sign, but you also said he has gas, diaherra and bloating.  All that can be from the lactose in the milk.

If for some reason, you cannot get him off dairy, you could try switching to Lactaid Whole Milk or 2% Lactaid to see what happens.

It taste the same as milk.

You could start with that and see how it goes and if no improvement, then switch to Soy or Rice milk.

If he is used to drinking milk though, at the age of 5, that is going to be tough.

You could just stop any milk (whole, rice, soy) no milk at all for 2 weeks.

He could drink calcium fortified orange juice for the calcium.

Just tell him the stores stopped selling milk for a few weeks, they have to make more. LOL

Hope this helps some, Wendy

Hey Jen, I just remember that your 5 yr old has excema also.  I DEFT. would try to take him off all dairy then.

With that and all the other symptoms, deft.

Good Luck, Wendy

You are right Wendy.  I am taking him to see his allergist on Thursday to see what he thinks.  He is OK with the idea so far, and I have cut him way back.  The lactose free is a great place to start!  Thanks.
