What do you sing for wind down?
« on: July 28, 2008, 04:25:23 am »
Every night I sing DD a couple of songs for her wind down and I've gotten very boring.  I sing the same few songs which on the one hand is great, I could have an OT kid running around one second and then I start singing "Amazing Grace" and it is so pavlovian that she will start yawning and rubbing her eyes.  On the other hand, I'm really getting sick of the same songs.

We do:
Amazing Grace
Somewhere Over the Rainbow
This Little Light of Mine
The Road Less Travelled
Our Father

What do you guys sing!?   Would love a few new ideas!
Alissa

Oh oh oh.   I love singing to my girls.

We sing ...

*This little light of mine (loves it when I phoooo it out)
*Hi my name is Joe (her fav right now)
*Mm Mm Went the little green frog
*Three green and speckled frogs
*Sun Sun Mr. Golden Sun

All of the above are interactive and she loves laying in her bed while I dance around her room (low key-ish).

we do nursery rhymes like twinkle twinkle, baa baa black sheep, rock a bye baby, humpty dumpty and then I sing songs like somewhere over the rainbow, yesterday and hymns.  I also make up songs; all to the tune of I'm a little teapot, we have one for rachel, one for sid(cat), one for mummy and one for daddy.

It's in Spanish - it's called "Duermete Mi Nina"

You know which one Iused to sing to the girls when they were about 4 months old? "In My Life" by the Beatles. I had to stop b/c I couldn't make it through the whole song without crying. But you might not have that issue.

You are my sunshine (my only sunshine.....)

and, one we made up, which goes:

'He's my baby-love,
He's the one, the one that we adore,
He's the little boy Mummy and Daddy waited for'

The tune leads you to just repeat that over and over :)

Enjoy it ladies, I can't sing to ds any more :(. 'Don't sing Mummy, it hurts my ears' - I've got a rubbish voice, but hmmmpf...
Caroline :)

Not all of them everytime but a lot!!
American Pie I get to 'Helter Skelter' and then forget the words and improvise the end. Sam joins in on occasion (like in the car) and has his own great phonetic almost-lyric version.

Caroliine LOL thats so funny he says you hurt his ears! Sorry I shouldn't laugh but ... it IS funny ;)

MJ Mum - i don't really sing as such. On her baby monitor there are various lullabies, and for the last 2 years now, we always put the same lullaby on. So it does the singinig for me!! I sing to her during the day, and actually, recently I've sung Rock a by baby (but change the lyrics at the end so that the baby and cradle DONT come falling down! I replace it with "when the bough brakes, the cradle will fall, and I will catch baby cradle and all".

But.... sounds like amazing grace is her cue to sleep! You sure you want to omit that one??

LOL!  No, I will NEVER omit that one!  Just want to add to the repertoire!  I've added others before that song to the wind down or our evening when we're trying to calm down, but when she's starting getting really relaxed or a bit OT, that's when we sing that one!

Thanks for the suggestions!  I've added in lots of new songs!!!  And it's getting much more interesting for the both of us!  She looks up at me like...oh mommy, I haven't heard that one!  :)

I get through like half the first verse of american pie and then I skip to the chorus... that's about it!  :)

My song for Ella when she goes to sleep is Lullaby by the Dixie Chicks:

They didn't have you where I come from
Never knew the best was yet to come
Life began when I saw your face
And I hear your laugh like a serenade

How long do you want to be loved
Is forever enough, is forever enough
How long do you want to be loved
Is forever enough
Cause I'm never, never giving you up

I slip in bed when you're asleep
To hold you close and feel your breath on me
Tomorrow there'll be so much to do
So tonight I'll drift in a dream with you

How long do you want to be loved
Is forever enough, is forever enough
How long do you want to be loved
Is forever enough
Cause I'm never, never giving you up

As you wander through this troubled world
In search of all things beautiful
You can close your eyes when you're miles away
And hear my voice like a serenade

How long do you want to be loved
Is forever enough, is forever enough
How long do you want to be loved
Is forever enough
Cause I'm never, never giving you up

How long do you want to be loved
Is forever enough, is forever enough
How long do you want to be loved
Is forever enough
Cause I'm never, never giving you up
Is forever enough
Cause I'm never, never giving you up

And my song for my 12 year old, which I have sang nearly every night to her (she wouldn't let me sing it to Ella!) is Dream and Little Dream by the Mama Cass:-

Stars shining bright above you
Night breezes seem to whisper "I love you"
Birds singing in the sycamore tree
Dream a little dream of me
Say "Night-ie night" and kiss me
Just hold me tight and tell me you'll miss me
While I'm alone and blue as can be
Dream a little dream of me
Stars fading but I linger on, dear
Still craving your kiss
I'm longing to linger till dawn, dear
Just saying this
Sweet dreams till sunbeams find you
Sweet dreams that leave all worries behind you
But in your dreams whatever they be
Dream a little dream of me
