SEVERE RASH ON ARMS ONLY ??? FOOD ALLERGY ???
« on: August 04, 2008, 20:02:40 pm »
Hello Wendy.  Hello everyone.

My dd has a severe rash on her arms.  It's been like that for a week now, and today it started spreading on her leg too :(  I already have a post on the health board, but Nicola suggested that Wendy should take a look at the pics in order to rule out food allergies.  Here are the pics and the link to the other thread;

Many thanks.

Has she had any new food to eat or new creams put on her?  Or has she been anywhere new?  Have you gotten to talk to a doctor yet?  Does she have any known allergies to anything?  I've never seen a rash like that before.  It's hard to tell from the pic, but is it raised with white bumps or just all red?

No new food.  No new creams, BUT a new shampoo...baby johnsons lavender.  I have stopped using it now, I'm just using water.  I have also limited her diet drastically.  Spoke to NHS direct twice, have been to ER on Saturday, and to the GP today.  With no real answers?  I have been prescribed a hydrocortisone cream, and referred to a dermatologyst, but the appointment is in October.  No known allergies.
The rash is raised and red.  Looks a bit like acne or big mosquito bites.

YIKES.....  Okay so here a few questions.

Did you give her ANY new food at all?
Was she playing outside and maybe got bite by a mosquito?

My son (now 3) had a very bad reaction to amoxillion (antibiotic).  He took it once at 6 months and was fine and then again at 9 months old.  On day 3 of the 2nd time giving it to him, I noticed he had a little mosquito "looking" bite on his arm and then one on his leg.

A few minutes went by and there was another and another.  They just kept popping up. I took him right to the doctor and by the time we got there, his entire back was covered.

To me.. It looks like an allergic reaction.  If you don't think she got bite by a mosquito, then I would say it is from the new shampoo or more likely a food.

My son is allergic to mosquito's also, so everytime he gets bite, they welp up really big.

Her face looks really red in the pictures.  Is that broken out too?

Okay, so I just read through the other post.  SO sorry I did not catch that post over there.

I am SO suprised that they did not give her an anihistimine.

Could you get an appt. with an allergist?

Oh... and what Jenn mentioned.  Could it be measels, chicken pox any of those?

Hi Wendy.  No new food.  The only thing I can think of is that I used home made chicken stock for the 1st time to make her some risotto.   Don't know about the mosquito.  They did look like mosquito bites but never saw one biting her.  She wasn't taking any meds either.  Her cheeks ar red because of teething.  This will sound like a stupid question, but could it be related to teething?

Anyway, the good news is that the cream seems to be working.  The rash has really settled, and at the same time her nappy rash has settled too ???  That's why I'm asking if it could be teething related.

The bad news is now I don't know how to proceed.  Because I have nothing to show to the specialist anymore.  And I still don't know what could have caused it.  So do I wait until it happens again :( ?

I have also read somewhere that if the rash is not itchy than the problem is not on the inside of the body, so not food related.  Is that true?

It is so fustrating when they get rashes and nobody seems to know the cause. It is good that the rash is calming down with the cream but annoying that a specialist did not get a look at it. It very well could have been a reaction to something as when I was on holiday and had a bad reaction I had to apply a topical steroid aswell as taking an antihistamine reguarly. I guess the hardest thing is not knowing one way or the other really.

It is quite possible that it was the shampoo since you have eliminated it and she seems to have cleared with the treatments.  I know that I personally cannot use many even baby lotions on my skin, or I am covered with hives that just get worse and worse until I take several rounds of steroids.  I know for a fact that one outbreak was from a Johnson's brand.  I stick with unscented and water as a first ingredient like Vaseline intesive care.  I use Cetaphil lotion and wash on my 5 year old with incredibly sensitive skin.  He got bit by gnats or something a week ago in our yard and he is still covered with bites.  It seems he is allergic to some bug and the more he scratches the more welts appear all over.  The same thing happened when he took ammoxicillin and zithromax when he was small.  Scratching makes it much worse and they don't know not to.

I agree with Jen, it may be from the shampoo then, since you have stopped it.

i doubt it is related to teething.  The red cheeks and diaper rash may be, but not this hives.

It really could be a mosquito bite or some sort of gnat.  I know when we were at the beach last year, my son got bite by "some" kind of flying bug and got hives like that.  They just kept popping up.  I remember taking him to the allergist wondering what was going on.

Once they clear up, you could always try the shampoo again and if they come back, then you have your answer.  Then you would know for sure.

Hugs to you, Wendy

Charm, I didn't realize the shampoo was Lavender.  That could possible the problem.  I massaged James with a lavender lotion when he was around 2mo and he had a rash all over his body.  The doctor said that lavender is actually very common to have an allergy to.  Our rash didn't look as nasty as K's but he did get it.  Like Wendy said, if you use it again then you will know for sure, or just avoid it :)

Yes I think I will keep using water for a while and then try the shampoo again after the rash has settled completely.  I spoke to another doctor today and he said that it's very common for young babies to get random rashes like that.  And that there are so many possible causes that it's very difficult to actually point at something.

Thankfully I convinced the doc to prescribe that cream yesterday.  It seems to be helping.
