Freezing Yogurt to Store??
« on: August 06, 2008, 15:24:51 pm »

finding 3% plain yogurt is definitely a hard enough challenge these days....since no one seems to want to eat fattening yogurt anymore!

i'm wondering.....can i make yogurt into cubed food, just like i would anything else??

anyone done it?  how does it turn out, how long does it last??

Not sure about the freezing, but have you tried Greek yogurt?  I think that has a lot more fat in it.

Serving Size 100 grams
Calories 130
Total Fat 10g
  &nbspSaturated Fat 5g
Cholesterol 0mg
Sodium 0mg
Potassium 0mg
Total Carbohydrates 4g
   Dietary Fiber 0g
   Sugars 4g
Protein 6g

Not positive, perhaps worth looking at thought?

ETA - some come HONEY flavored, be sure not to try that kind - babies under 1 shouldn't have honey.  I know they have plain too, I've seen it.

Dunno about freezing yogurt, I guess you can freeze milk, I just dunno how it'd come out when thawed :-\

Anyhooo... Yeo Valley Organic Yogurts are full-fat, natural yogurts (also come flavoured for grown ups) which are very yummy!

Where in the world are you?

I freeze yoghurt all the time....but then we eat it like ice cream (let it thaw enough to mush) or as popsicles....I've never tried to actually thaw it all the way out.

I would think you could store it frozen for at least 8 wks.....

If you have a safeway nearby, I used to buy my LO's Balkan style yoghurt...I think it was 6% fat. CREAMY!

http://www.wholesomebabyfood.com/baby-food-freezing-chart.htm ............ says its safe to freeze, but the texture may change.

Stonyfield farms says...........
Does freezing yogurt destroy or alter the effectiveness of the live cultures?
You can freeze a cup of yogurt. A cup of yogurt that has been frozen and thawed will have a different look and texture than fresh yogurt. The cultures become dormant when frozen, but once thawed either in the refrigerator or by your body heat when ingested; they will become live and active once again. There will be a few cultures that do die, but there are so many billions in our products, that it is truly insignificant.

And that's all the say about that.  Lol

I totally forgot... stonyfield makes those yogurt in a tube... we've frozen those (says right on the package to do it for a treat) - it was fine.

As far as how long, I'd assume you'd use the same guidelines for any other frozen food you'd feed baby.

wow thanks everyone!

guess i could have googled all that myself (stacy is away on holiday and she's my google queen! thanks for stepping in Zoey  ;)), but with my little two, i just needed to know.

no harm in trying.  he is teething anyways, so i might be able to let him have cubes of it from the safe-feeder (once i get the banana out, see other post, lol).

So Balkan Style and Greek Style....i do have Safeways, so i'll be sure to check there.  I just normally get the Astro Natural Ingredients 3% plain....if i don't run into something organic.
