weaning from dream feed
« on: August 06, 2008, 15:59:05 pm »
My 4 month ds has been waking consistently for the df, so I want to try to wean him from it. Any suggestions on how to eliminate it? Since I bf exclusively, I don't know how to ensure he is still getting enough calories. I have been trying to feed him a little bit less each time, but since he has been waking up before I get there to feed him, he's still awake while I feed him, and thus cries if I pull him off before he is done eating, or if he only eats on one side.

What time is he waking for the df, what time did you last feed?  It may not be waking consistently for the df perse, more i'm hungry and I need food.  Andrew always woke somewhere around 10 / 10.30 and I gave him a full feed.  Tracy said to keep up a df until around the 8month mark when many babies drop it naturally.

What time does he wake having had the df.
What are the other feed times during the day.

Personally, I don't think it's something to wean yet.  If he's waking, feed.  Some people don't dreamfeed as they find it disrupts the rest of the night's sleep, but i have no experience of this.

His last feed is right before he goes to bed- usually about 7:20. And he has also eaten at around 6 as well, so it's just a top up. About 2 weeks ago he started waking up occasionally right at 10:30, which is when I usually did the df. But since then, he has woken us at 10:20, then 10, and last night at 9:15. I feed him one other time during the night, around 4 or 4:30. I had started to only feed him on one side at that feeding, because he wasn't that hungry when he woke up in the morning, which I figured meant he didn't need to eat that much at night.
The problem with me keeping the df is that my husband and I work with college students, and I need to be out of the house one or two nights a week until 10:30 or 11. And ds doesn't take a bottle, so I'd be in trouble if he keeps waking up. I don't mind him continuing to feed during the night that one time, even if I have up his intake of food at that feeding...
Also, he is on about a 3 to 3.5 hr easy. his naps are really inconsistent, so his eating times depend on whether he naps well or not.
