at what age did your toddler 1st climb out of the cot?
« on: August 06, 2008, 16:37:22 pm »
Our ds got out of his cot last nite and came into our room and we don't know how!!! If he did climb out we are afraid he may have hurt himself or will do (although when he came into the room he wasn't crying). If he didn't climb out perhaps dh and I walk in our sleep and took him out!!!

We were both really tired last nite and only remember him walking into our room about 3am. He usually calls out at around 3am and we put him back to sleep or take him into our room.

Really bizarre, can't imagine him getting out of the cot without falling...

He's 13 months by the way. Anyone's lo climbing out of their cot at age 1?

Eeek!  Thankfully none of mine have ever done that. You sure you couldn't have got him out?

My brother climbed out at 11 months! Leorah is really good at climbing but couldn't climb out of the cot until a few months ago, she is in a grobag so can't climb out at night. By 12 months she could carefully get down from places she climbed though so it is possible he could have done it without hurting himself, does he climb much in the day?

DS through a leg over at 7 months but I caught him...I don't remember the actual first time he escaped, but any clue would be that he was in his BBB at 14 months because we couldn't keep him in

DD....hasn't really tried yet!

Woopster- we can't be sure, unless dh or I sleep walk, but I doubt it.

Skatty- he tries to climb in the day, but isn't really successful, or we don't allow him to do it much (tries to climb into his walker, type he can sit in, but I usually pick him up and put him in once I see him trying to get in it. He climbs in and out of his buggy too, up and down the stairs -monitored by us. Other than that I'll need to ask the childminder if he climbs much in the day.

Just to say his cot is quite large and deep, size of a play pen. When he stands in it, the top is at his shoulder level.

That's quite a mystery then isn't it? He'd have to be really strong to lift himself over if he can't cock his leg up though my DD has done this from the outside of her cot when she was quite young, maybe 14 months but that is because she could get a step up from the floor from the outside. Have you got a grobag you can put him in to be on the safe side? I would also put some cushions beside the cot just in case.

If you often bring him in your room could you have done that and he wandered from the bed? When my DD used to have regular NWs my DH would not remember that he went to her in the night!

The cot is deep but it also has cot bumpers layering all four sides, it's just that it didn't look trampled on. You're right, maybe one of us went in and just can't remember...I just hate not knowing for sure.

If we are awake enough for the next few nights, we'll wait a bit before going in to him when he wakes at 3 am and see if he makes efforts to get out. Will do the cushion idea too...

I'm warming more to the idea that we were probably so tired, we can't remember taking him out...hmmm... :)

I'd take the bumpers off - if he did climb out that what would help him!

I was thinking the same thing.  The bumpers could be used like a step.

DS climbed out at 19mos and we put the mattress on the floor, on a couple of pieces of wood, but still within the 4 sides of the crib.  Then he couldn't get out again until he was about 28mos when we put him in a BBB.

agree. sounds like the bumpers are helping him to get out.

This is something that I'm worried about too as I've caught my own LO stepping on his cot bumpers..but he's not an independent walker yet and is still pretty unstable so i doubt this climbing would happen to me this soon.
