what should I have done in this situation?
« on: August 14, 2008, 02:06:27 am »
My 17 month old is teething his eye teeth and we have had a few nights of later bedtimes due to a death in the family so he seems OT......again. His EASY was 6:15 wake 11:30-1:30 nap 7pm bedtime. 5.25 A time pre-nap, 5.5 post nap.

Last night he went down waaay too late at 7:30 with 6.25 hours A time due to a family gathering. I did wi/wo until 9pm! Then he woke at 7am soooo tired. He acted OT and I put him down at 11am with only 4 hours A time. He only slept 1 hour 10 mins so I put him to bed at 5:55, more than usual A time but the earliest I could get him down. This is usually how we get into an OT cycle that can last for days.

So my question is, should I have waited the usual A time of 5.25 hours even though I suspect OT? Did I do the right thing not attenpting 2 naps even though his evening A time was too long?

Hi jcsmom-

My condolences  :(

I've found that even if M has a bad night (e.g. sleeping only 10 hours), she still needs about the same A time (maybe 10 mins less).  If I put her down much earlier, despite her being OT, she'll take a short nap.  If I put her down at almost usual A time, she'll sleep longer.  It may take a few days to sort itself out, but if you keep sticking with typical A times it should go back to normal.
