Does pumping take milk from baby's next feed?
« on: August 14, 2008, 13:40:43 pm »
I hope this isn't a stupid question... I just can't seem to figure out exactly when the best time to pump is.  Especially since I have both a toddler and an 11 week old to juggle!  (Literally, sometimes).

I generally can't pump *right* after she feeds.  It just never works for one reason or another.  I can usually pump when she goes down for her first nap but this can sometimes be as close to an hour before she's going to be ready to eat again.  This morning she got up at 7:30 and ate.  I put her down for her nap just before 9 and pumped about 9:15 or so.  I got about 3 oz in 15 minutes.  She should be ready to eat again around 10:30, so did I take those 3 oz away from her next feed?

We only JUST started having some success getting her to take a bottle (yeah!) so I am trying to build up a little supply.  Is two or three times a day too often to pump?  I just don't want to steal her food!

As far as I'm aware your breasts are continually making milk and you'd never get as much with a pump as you would with a baby anyway, so I'd say you are ok!

You could pump after every feed if you wanted to. There will be enough to go round.

Hi, for me i would say that was a little close to her next feed. A lot of mums on the boards try and pump about an hr after the feed, you don't get as much but you can add it all together.

It is right that your body is constantly producing milk but pumping this late could well take the initial fast flow away from your lo.

Oops...  it's so hard because only recently have I actually felt like I had a few minutes to sit down and try to pump.  Thanks to my lil' independent sleeper :).

She has been waking more at night the last couple of nights, too... do you think that's related to the fact that I was pumping too close to her feedings?  I've only been pumping the last few days.

She could be heading for a growth spurt. Do they have one at 3 months? It's a long time since I had a 3 month old!  Is she feeding when she wakes?

Yes, she seems ravenous.  But not so much during the day.  I added a feeding back in today so I'm hoping that will help her tonight.

When she takes a bottle she only takes about 2.5 oz.   Is that a decent amount for a 12 week old?  She was 10.5 lbs at her 2 month checkup.
